or they are arrogant idiots who knew what it was but didnt care because it was "cool"

An anti-racist would never think it is cool.

That's the point. You have to at least have racist sympathies to think the SS symbol is cool. Period.

That's not entirely fair. There's a sizeable area between "racist" and "anti-racist" called "oblivious moron", and I tend to prefer giving people the benefit of the doubt.

I strongly disagree. I've met military history nuts who dont have a racist bone in their body who go to great lengths to get WWII paraphenalia and think its cool.

No, you don't.

To repeat myself:
I do, however, think that they think that the SS is cool!

And why not? The SS uniforms were designed by Hugo Boss (or his company, at least), the uniforms are black (black is an awesome, powerful and cool colour!), and even the German army helmets from WW2 look cool (shaped as they were, to look like Roman helmets).

And the German army - especially the SS, which was the elite of the army - during WW2 was awesome! They conquered almost all of Europe! And the SS were the elite parts of that awesome army!

And they've seen German soldiers from WW2, and SS soldiers especially, portrayed in movies and books. And those soldiers were wicked cool! Like Darth Vader even! (Who also dressed in black and had a Roman-shaped helmet.)
I can easily understand why people think the SS is "cool". And there doesn't have to be any racism involved in it.

To associate oneself with it most likely requires some amount of stupidity, ignorance or racism, however.

nope. You are either anti-racist, or a racist sympathizer, or a N-bomb dropping racist. That is the spectrum. A lot of people claim they aren't racist, when it is quite clear much of their ideology is driven by racist preconceptions.

Don't even try to tell me one out of seven of these guys didn't know it was a Nazi symbol. That's pure fantasy. More than likely, ALL of them knew it was a Nazi symbol.

You don't live in today's culture as a young man, with any kind of military fondness, and not know at least what the swatsika and the SS were.

Let's take a poll, at any gaming or military forum, and ask people if they know what the SS symbol is. I bet well over 85% would know. But you are going to try to tell me, NONE of these seven knew? Balderdash. Such denial.

Now, if this was a group of knitters, known as the "sewing Sisters" I might be inclined to believe they were ignorant of the symbol.

But it's not. Not even close.

You can't think it's cool, and not have racist sympathies. Again, would a JEw ever think it's cool? Why not? Even if the Jew was a WW II buff? Give me a break.

Of course they probably all knew it was an old WWII Nazi symbol for the SS. Big whoop, that doesn't in any way imply they are racists.

That's not a spectrum, that's two unrealistic monoliths that you've constructed to suit yourself. It's un-empirical nonsense. (I mean, what's a "racist-sympathiser", anyway? How many people are going around saying "My, I do admire those racists, but sadly it's just not for me"?)

Now, if this was a group of knitters, known as the "sewing Sisters" I might be inclined to believe they were ignorant of the symbol. But that doesn't imply tha they are actually racists. That's a leap of logic which you haven't substantiated in any way.

Self-righteous swagger and awkward paragraphing aside, I don't actually disagree with this.

You can't think it's cool, and not have racist sympathies. Again, would a JEw ever think it's cool?
Well, Chaim Weitz evidently does.

Your ignoring a whole lot of people who are wholly uninterested in race and completely uninterested in the politics of race and would much rather focus all their time on thinking about something else.

Oh, please! Give me a break.

The vast majority of people are actually able to separate a complex issue into components and look at each independently from time to time.

I'll easily say it: I think the SS-uniforms look cool! The uniforms inspire authority, respect and power, and they look awesome. And lots of the symbols used by the SS - and the Third Reich for that matter - are cool (figures, they borrowed the cool symbols from all over...). I'm also quite impressed with what the German armed forces were able to accomplish during the war.

That doesn't mean that I'm in any way ignoring the crimes committed by members of the SS or by the Third Reich. To claim that is simply laughable.

Regardless, just to prove your silly argument wrong:

Spoiler :
I see your "What about the upset Jews?"-card, and I raise you with Neo-Nazi Jews:

Your move.

Yeah, they are the same ones that always assume police shootings were justified, and are the same ones that always assume every muslim murdered in the middle east is a terrorist. Their politics are completely race-blind, as in, they don't recognize half their politics are founded on racism. Then they claim, "i'm not racist".

I'm not even saying any of those seven uses the N-bomb casually, (although I bet at least one does). But to use the SS symbol (and at least one knew what it meant, all this posturing like they all are completely ignorant that it was a Nazi symbol is complete denial) shows a complete ignorance of ones own racism, AT BEST. That is the best benefit of the doubt you can give them.

It is utter foolishness to suggest none of them knew it was a Nazi symbol. Wishful thinking about an idealized military to continue to perpetuate ones own wish for more imperialistic war. USMC can do no wrong. Hoo rah.

(I mean, what's a "racist-sympathiser", anyway? How many people are going around saying "My, I do admire those racists, but sadly it's just not for me"?)

People who hate people of other races, but are either too dishonest with themselves to admit it, or too steeped in cultural stereotyping to even recognize it. People who somehow always find themselves on the side of their own race in any disagreement, although always claiming to be fair minded.

You know, people who say things like "welfare is harmful to blacks, and they don't even know it" As if welfare is a black phenomenon.

Would you ever fly an SS flag?

Would you ever fly an SS flag?
No, I'm not stupid. Whatever my reasons would have been for flying an SS flag, I know how such a flag would have been interpreted by most others.

Besides, I'm not really hung up on SS flags.

I would have liked it if we brought back the Bellamy salute however. I think it looks much, much better than the standard military greeting of most armed forces today. But I'm realistic enough to know that won't happen in the foreseeable future.
