UUs that feel too "normal"

It's funny, I don't recall every feeling bored when my Praets are winning victories over my nearest neighbours, stealing holy cities and wonders without the benefit of siege weapons long before the BCs are over. Actually, rather than being bored, I'm usually giggling with fiendish delight. :mwaha:

I usually avoid Rome because it's too easy. A super unit with no field counter until 1000's upon 1000's of beakers later stacked with well above average leader trait combinations Makes for the kind of ownage that only inca, persia, and egypt can match (possibly sumeria with rigged starts to overcome his traits).

The UB is below average, but cmon, only Inca can have EVERYTHING in single player...

Definitely the Oromos are better, and... when you upgrade them, their promotions (drill 1 & 2) remain relevant throughout the rest of the game...
+25% against pre-gunpowder weapons means very little when the unit has been upgraded to infantry... for example.

And I reply: The Ottomans are better.

You think so? I dunno, I find +25% GP production is nothing to scoff at. I build markets in most of my cities anyway for the :) boost, and specialist cities, with their higher populations, tend to need them even if their commerce output doesn't justify them on the financial side of things.

I suggest that the original question more the problem.

i suspect some want more "power" for their unique unit.

Whereas civ3 had the Conquistidor and the Dromon and f-15-
Explorer, Trireme and Jet replacements- niche- more fun and "powerful" in more subtle ways.

the conquistidor and cataphract are ...zzzzz now

the evidence is clear- pandering to the stupid has made for stupid uu's.

25% GPP is garbage by itself. If you set up a dedicated GPP site you're going to get 200% there with NE + pacifism. 225% with the forum. It's unlikely this gets you even 1 extra GP across a game, though you might get one a turn or so sooner, maybe.

As for markets in generally, they're a poor investment if only worth 1 :). They're worth considering after that, and very good if you can somehow get all 4 (including whale ). Monarchy based :) and other :) buildings tend to beat them out though.

With the strength of commerce in a bur cap they're often worth it there, too.

Slightly off-topic... but +25% GPP is less than a quarter of PHI (since that also has discounted universities). Four times the additional effect of most UBs would solidly outclass any trait; imo the forum is a contender for the worst non-obsoleting UB.

Atleast it beasts stupied UB that needs coast to work. Sure they own on a watter based map but they are :):):):)ing worthless if you play a map with littel/no watter.

I'll take the GP showing up a couple of turns early, thank you very much. I often find myself in some tight tech/wonder races, and any advantage, no matter how slight, is welcome, especially on the higher levels.

Brain just went kaput. What's the UH?

We are not comparing the forum to a vacuum. We are comparing it to the yields available from other unique buildings, where it is among the worst.

The rest of rome covers that more than adequately however.

Doesn't YOUR vacuum have GPP generation feature? Talk about 'Bed, Bath and Beyond'!

That's like saying 'I hate the stupid UBs which give extra happiness when I'm going for a cultural victory'. Games change- the Ger will not be very useful on an isolated start Archipelago, I assure you.

You can get knights, cuirassers, and cavalry amphibious out of the gate if you have religion......which by the latter 2 is probable.

Many of the really late UB are bad cause lots of times the game is already won when they come into play same with some UU. Obviously all UB cant be great everytime but being good more is a + in my opinion. Obviously if you only play archipelago the watter based UB are great but since the AI is to stupid to play heavy watter based maps you will probably win anyway:). If you are going for late culture win early + happines UB is still usefull.

I still like the Redcoat and Cossack as they are now. The thing is that they replace good units that are often utilized in a game winning push anyways. I was surprised how much the mounted bonus came into play when I massed Cossacks too. The most important thing though is that they both have excellent sprites!

I think the Forum is a great building when paired with Augustus. With the Parthenon he'll be the closest you can get to an Ind/Phi leader..

1. Dog Soldger - excellent early rush unit (no need for copper to build them so you get them as soon as you tech the bronze working) - I tech bronze first and hit the first neighbour with 2 dog soldgers while he is still defending with warriors.
2. conquistador - they can fortify (not bad)
3. preats - excellent
4. ormo - like the free upgrades (the same with Numidian Cav).
5. bowman - pale
6. navy seal and panzer - uselles, by the moment they show up you are already a winner or looser
7. galic warrior in combination with dun can be hills III early giving the 30% retreat chance (not bad)
8. jaguar - uselles if there is no jungle or forest arround
9. fast worker - never saw a worker beat a tank - uselles compared to the standard worker

Workers beat tanks all the time. Without workers you would be toiling away with muskets while enemy tanks role in. Fast workers can get you those early techs a turn earlier, get that chop into the wonder slightly earlier. And its benefit, though decreasing as time goes by, never expires.
It isn't in with the top UUs, but it isn't "useless".
