Having read the 1.21 threads, I saw nothing to put me off so I decided to bite the bullet and downloaded the 1.21 patch. It only took about 32 mins on my slow 56K connection and installed with no problems.

I have now started half a dozen or so games on warlord level to test it out. No bugs or problems found yet but one thing is worrying...I am getting the kind of effects on warlord level which were all too familiar on higher levels before...poor starting positions, elite warrior losing battle to conscript warrior, neighbours declaring war while I'm still building first few cities...all that sort of stuff. I will have to play some more to see if this is just an accident but if it is an intentional change then I would not be happy about it.

A couple of discoveries : playing with "no barbarians" seems to produce no goody huts as a consequence. So be warned. Although more testing is needed to see if this is 100% true

Abandon city works great ! Nice one :D

What have your first impressions been ?

So the option to add units was a 'bug' and was removed as such.

What's the betting that good ol' Firaxis will release the full editor (with all the add units, etc) in the expansion pack, and charge us for it.

They also don't want the likes of me, Dark Shear, etc making new units because, hey! I see a crusades pack, and a future pack still to be sold! It'll look a bit bad if we start churning out all the units before they do...

As it is, I guess I'll just have to use the 1.17 editor.

I still think it's a bit of a p!ss take, though. After all they could have fixed the 'cancel a' to add bug by v.1.17. My guess is that they realised how popular modding was, and so decided not to let us make them for free, but too sell us them, instead.

I can't see any other complications, after all...

I think you are wrong on this one...
The ability to add units was a bug, it will probably be supported fully in the next patch.

I run an AMD K6-III 450 MHz and I'm definitely noticing the turns taking longer including at the very start of a new game when it usually runs quite smoothly even on a huge map

Perhaps it is the new save file compression and the new inter-turn lag is caused by the game spending the extra time compressing the autosaves. If this is so, I'd frankly prefer it if the .sav file compression were a pref rather than forced on us, so those of us who notice serious performance hits but have ample hard disk space can trade space efficiency for time.

I haven't noticed any decrease in speed. Could be that I have P4 1.8 GHz 512MB Ram though :D
