v173 and v123W up

1) You can't please all the people all of the time... and as Toaster said: It would be far better for a Scot to be called British than to be called English! ;)

2) Agreed again on the 3 lions... it makes a lot of sense for their starting period too.

So based on this argument, should we change Spain to Iberia as the Spanish AI always settles lands that would become Portugal?

Historically, the English prior to the formation of the UK did strive to control all the territory of what is now known as the British Isles (and France for that matter during certain periods of its history).

I feel that leaving the civ as England, starting in London is not so bad. In warlords, I find that more often than not Inverness has been sacked by the Viking, and Ireland is controlled by the Celts. Perhaps make Inverness harder for the Vikings to sack, and NOT flip automatically to the English?

The point remains that though they strove to it, the Scots and welsh were in the way. to make it accurate you would need to either add Scotland, Wales and Ireland or rename England to Britain. To be honest I can't think why some people are making such strong arguments over changing a name and a flag, which would just make it feel more accurate. I always hate the way it's always English culture in countries that are united with England, but are basically not England. A simple change of name would remedy this.

True, but weren't their people in the way of Roman expansion? Chinese expansion? Were the Germanic peoples all under the same banner? Wasn't Spain originally 5 kingdoms?

Yes, but the noticeable difference is that those countries do not exist any more. The ones I'm discussing do. Obviously the most successful civs are the ones that lasted out. Also, I'm sure the English name causes offence to Non-England Britons.

Agreed. In a conception of RFC where we can change the names of civs to their modern counterparts (ie: Rome becomes Italia) this would make sense. Short of that I have no trouble keeping England as England.

Honestly I have the most fun playing as France or Viking and trying to conquer English lands!

Why not conquer British lands? :P Also, I like the idea of changing names, like in the evolution of civs thread. "The countries of the island of Britania have voted to join in union. Henceforth you are ruler of the United Kingdom of Great Britain!" You could have Scotland and Wales as Independants before then.

EDIT: Removed stupidity about Rome "renaming" itself Italia, when obviously this never happened, what with Rome collapsing and all. Sorry, I was just trying to think of good messages *ashamed*

......what?

the toaster... It's not funny, I know...

I've briefly skimmed this page and I was amazed to find someone had managed to construct an argument against calling the British Isles British.

Let's just slow down and think for a second.

Which existed in reality? The English Empire, or the British Empire?

aren't the 3 lions just English?

England = lions / st. George's cross
Scotland = St.Andrew's cross
Wales = dragon
Ireland = harp

innit?

A harp-playing dragon attacking a cross-bearing lion would be totally sweet.

It's much better than the Standard of Queen Alexandra:

Of course not - there was never a nation called "Iberia". There was, and is of course, a nation called Britain. Reflecting the unity of that would be more "politically correct".
