Vampire not gaining strength (Not a Bug)

Gathering storm, NFP, No mods. Playing around with Sanguine society to test vamps and my vampire unit does not gain strength after kills. The wiki says the vamp will gain strength after a unit is killed in a adjacent tile.
I have tested this by killing both barbarians and other non barb units, both with the vampire and with another unit near the vampire. Vampire's strength never changes. Im in the ancient era... do i have to wait for another gov title or something? Or am i missing something else?
Thanks in advance for any advice/help.
 
Have you checked this by letting you display the combat preview? Currently (a Firaxis official said they would look into it to see if it can be changed) those strength boni are only diplayed there.
 
Just to piggyback on Pfeffersack's comment...

The base strength of the vampire unit will update based on the strongest combat strength unit you have produced. From the pedia:

Has base Combat Strength equal to the strongest unit your cities have produced.
The strength granted from kills is handled via modifiers, so the base strength doesn't change, but the mod strength is visible when viewing the combat preview.

Normally, with units you can hover over the unit portrait and a tooltip will let you know what abilities it has. With Vampires, for whatever reason, FXS uses the GameModifiers table to apply the combat modifiers, instead of via the UnitAbilities & UnitAbilityModifiers table. The UnitAbilities table is the one that contains the ability text string for the tooltip. The GameModifiers table doesn't. Per Carl in another thread:
Unfortunately, the combat modifier for units that have died near the Vampire does not display on the unit abilities panel when mousing over the unit portrait. I have passed that recommendation along!

So tl;dr what you're experiencing isn't a bug.

Thanks to both of you. It will take a bit of getting used to, but at least its not a bug.
