Vassal States can get a diplomatic victory?

I was just beaten by my own vassal state! :( I didn't know they could do that.

Also I was never given a chance to vote for myself...not sure why?

I was kind of thinking that once a civ concedes - they can't beat you while still a vassal. Guess I was wrong.

Any tips to avoid this?

Was it via the Apostolic Palace? Did you have the religion of the AP as your state religion?

I'm guessing that you are ineligible for a diplomatic victory via the AP unless you to have it as your state religion, just as you are ineligible to head the AP unless you have it as your state religion.

Perhaps your vassal had the AP religion as their state religion, but you had a different religion.

Never have a vassal, murder them!

Oh, wow, that has got to suck.. It must be a very rare thing (hasn't happened to me)

You mean the entire world voted your vassal state into diplo victory? How did it get on the ballot? How large were you and your vassal compared to the other civs?

(Yes, the vote was via the Apolistic Palace. Do you have to have the religion of the AP as your state religion to get a vote there?).

I owned 80% of the largest of 2 continents. I was massively winning due to rush attacks earlier. I wasn't paying a lot of attention to religion, wasn't in the Apolistic Palace (or at least I was never a candidate in the elections).

The weird thing is, the other 2 civs that were on the other continent were never given votes at all either.

I think it may be easier to just kill enemies rather than making them vassals. Well, not easier but at least this wouldn't happen again....

Can a vassal state employ espionage against you?

to win diplo via AP you must either build the AP or "x" (I'm not sure what the criteria is to be the rival) and have a state religion. that state religion must have spread to every other civ (afaik). then you get to have an election. everyone gets a vote but the amount of their vote is contingent on the # of cities with that religion (afaik).

so, if your vassal built the AP or met criteria "x" and the religion had spread to everyone then yes it is certainly possible for them to win diplo via AP without being overly powerful or advanced in tech or anything of that nature. it is also possible for them to win via the UN if they were somehow able to build the UN and people liked them more than they liked the rival.

I would regards this as a bug. A vassal should not be a candidate for an AP victory.

Why the heck not? Just because it's a vassal doesn't mean it still isn't a civilization. Sure it's under your protection, but it still retains its own sovereignty.

You just should never let it happen!

Yep this can happen under the circumstances some people described. If the vassal has the Apostolic Palace or the United Nations, they're guaranteed a spot on the ballot. Sounds like your vassal built the AP (or captured a city that had it), so they were first pick. Second pick would have been whoever had the highest population of the given religion.

If you're in danger of losing to an AP victory, a funny way to sometimes save your skin it is to gift the participants Mass Media. You get +relations and they lose their seat.

--Good to know this is something that could sneak up on us, thanks. I never would have thought a vassal was eligable for victory either. I kind of think of it as semi-free slaves.

Anyone else think we should be allowed to build stuff in our Vassal's cities too? I hate taking one, but only being able to airlift one unit at a time to their cities towards my goal of starting a war with one of their neighbours. I need to be able to build airports in their cities! Nothing else even, just that.

Forts have not provided me the means to do paradrops FROM them - anyone else find this? It says in the info guide that they should function as such?
