I got the game on steam. Latest version. My friend has the latest version too but somehow the version number wasn't updated.

Mine says 1.0.1.221 while his says 1.0.1.217. Game won't let us play multiplayer.

Is there an easy way to edit the version number? or is there some other quick fix for this? I don't think he wants to reinstall the game. Verifying files with steam doesn't help,

...then he doesn't have the latest version.
Try to verify the integrity of the game files via Steam, that should hopefully fix it.

Your friend does not have the latest version: See this
You have the latest, he doesn't. Tell him to update his game.

Yeah but steam should update it. Steam says it is updated. He received update the same time I did but his version number did not change. I was just thinking that since there wasn't anything truly different between these two versions (korean localization), I was just thinking that maybe it's possible to somehow edit the version number or temporarily make the game ignore it. I want to finish one game....

Have you checked that his Steam allows CiV to update?.
If his version hasn't changed then really his game hasn't been updated.

And no, it's not possible to "change version number" since it's not a .txt file, is the CiV.exe which sets the version number.
Perhaps what you could try is to copy your civ.exe and paste on your friend's Civilization installation folder. Or better: just copy your entire game and paste onto your friend's. That way you ensure both have the same version.

That sounds dangerous. Are you sure that my exe doesn't have something to do with my steam account? I wonder if deleting the file allows steam to redownload it.

Absolutely, you may check your Civ.exe version by checking properties and seeing "Version" tab.

And no, I don't think that just deleting the .exe would fix the thing, it would require you to verify the files (So Steam download it again), and it would probably download the same file. However trying doesn't hurt, and it "may" work but I seriously doubt it.
I still think that pasting your CiV game into your friend's would be the best option. (If you are unsure you could backup your friend's game, just in case).

Yeah, I was actually just worried that steam might think that I'm trying to let others play my game but perhaps thats not possible. I guess I'll try giving him the exes and make sure he makes backups.

Thanks for help guys. I wish editing the file so that properties show different version worked....

I would keep verifying the local cache. Doing it just once may not work.

Sometimes running steam as administrator and verifying the cache will work when just verifying the cache does not (worked for me).
Sometimes changing the download server in steam can help.
Deleting (or moving/renaming to be on the safe side) the main civ .exe and then verifying the cache should force steam to download a new copy.
If your friend has a Mac, the Mac version of the game is not on the same patch number and Macs and PCs can not play together.
