Very weird errors

I've been having a problem lately with my game and I'm not sure what to do to fix it.

When I try to start the game by clicking the icon or running the disk I get a hit or miss.

Before I can even get to the load game screen (and occasionally once I'm loading a saved game) my entire screen goes blue and I get a message saying I have an error.

File Name: VMCPD(01) + 0000061C Error 0D : 0028 : C00582C8

I click Enter to return to Windows and another error comes up saying

Error: 0E : 0028 : C0014C8E

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game and it still happens.

The game was working fine up until last week. The only thing I can remember doing was creating a games folder on my desktop for all my game shortcuts.

After these error messages my whole computer crashes and I am unable to even shut down.

This only happens when I try to run Civ 3 and not every time. Sometimes I can play the game just fine, other times I can load the game, play a few rounds and THEN it crashes.

I have no patches and never had any patches. I've tried running ScanDisk but it stalls while scanning system areas. Nothing wrong with Data areas. I'm running Windows Me.

Any tips would be very useful!

Are your save files still in the origanal directory? (Or is the origanal save directory still there?). Maybe it's trying to look for that directory...

The save directory is in the same place as it always has been. Nothing changed there.

I also checked my DirectX 8 files, no problems detected.

I don't think the error is game related, even though it might seem so.

The reference errors sound memory related. Unfortunately it could be a few things.

Q. How much disk space do you have left open?

Win ME is rubbish. I don't know anyone that is running it. Reason?
It copies everything into a hidden file, for restoring purposes. Basically cutting your hard drive space to halve. You can't see this though. If you have insufficient disk space, you run out out of space for your page file and you will get memory related errors and blue screens.

You could search for the file and rename the .exe extension to "file.old" Do this a last lastly.

This might solve the problem.

or

You might just have other memory problems. More hardware related.


It might be that your RAM is dead

You could take out a ram module and restart your PC.

How much Ram do you have, how many modules? (Try removing one at a time, remember to take out slot 2 and not 1 and then swop two to one, etc)

You could search Microsoft support, but it is a hideous site. You will have to look really hard to find the error report.

I would:

1. Test the Ram and replace if necessary
2. Install W2k (I'm not a XE fan)

I don't think it's my memory as I have quite a lot of it.

I've got an Intel Pentium 4 Processor with 1400Mhz

Total Physical Memory: 127.34 MB
Available Physical Memory: 348.00 MB
Total Virtual Memory: 2.0 GB
Available Virtual Memory: 1.72 GB

My C Drive is 40 GB with 23.15 GB of Free space.

My Scan Disk doesn't say there are any errors. So, I'm at a loss!

I doubt it is the internet because I have no problems when I go online, but it is probably something similar.
