So I had a vet soldier in my colony. I put a free colonist into a university and he could not be trained into a vet soldier. Is the only way to get a vet soldier = Europe?

Thanks. =)

Was he working a tile/in a building, or was he holding guns 'outside' the colony?

I don't think so, I think you have it right (in a building). If that's the case then I don't know the answer... I've never actually tried to train a veteran soldier, to be honest. :)

I had the same problem with a fur trader, I think you only have the choice between 3 or 4 of the specialiste in the settlement.

Will the promote after a few successful victories like in previous editions? Is there any benefit to using your free colonists instead of distillers as musketmen? Should you wipe out their specialty first?

Mine didn't train either when I had them working in a city with a fortified dragoon.

I can pretty much guarantee you that a fortified dragoon does not count as 'in the city' from this point of view. The terminology is very clear on that.

A fortified unit is "outside the colony" for these and other things (like rebel sentiment). :)

So can you train Veteran Soldiers in a university (or more specifically, what is the reason for the observation of the OP, assuming he had a soldier in the city working something)?

Official answer (from the XML):

They cannot be trained.

Code:
			<iTeacherWeight>0</iTeacherWeight>

That's my guess to what this means. :)

BTW, I just had a colonist scout upgrade to seasoned scout after gaining some experience. :) So that at least works, but no surprising since you can't buy them.

I think the scouts upgrade sometimes when you visit native villages. At first I thought it was only in villages were seasoned scout was the village specialty, but I think I remember it happening in a village where that wasn't the case. Maybe it's just one of the bonuses you can get from talking with the chief.

[edit]re: vet soldiers
So the only way to get a vet soldier is from Europe? That's odd, they probably should have just removed the veteran soldier specialty since they included CIV experience and promotions. It's kind of a weird double system now. At the very least they should rename them to "trained soldier," or maybe "officer"? Anything but "veteran," as veteran is clearly related to combat experience, which all your units get after fighting.
