Is there a way to save only a designated portion of a video file, so that you can work with it without the rest of the video getting in the way? Or otherwise "cut off" the rest of the video (either temporarily or permanently) without necessarily saving anything?

Edit: Ideally any "yes" answer should involve using only Windows Media Player and/or Real One Player, but if other programs are necessary, feel free to mention them.

Well, have you tried Windows Movie Maker? Not the best, but you can cut a movie, and then save it (which I take you don't want to do that? :) ).

Windows Movie Maker = cute little tool.

WMM2 = Unresponsive buggy nonsense that MS forces an upgrade to.

If you plan on doing anything with video files, get VirtualDub - it's free and very useful;-

Okay, thanks guys. I'll try WMM, and if it doesn't help, VD.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, that's exactly what I want to do. :)
