The Modern Age livestream - new leader, Harriet Tubman

Mechanically I like Tubman's abilities. Unhindered movement through vegetation is always nice, and gaining war support when being on the receiving side can be pretty useful. I'm most curious about what kind of gains Tubman can get from espionage actions, but it feels like she could probably provoke opposing civs into declaring war on her with enough espionage.

One interesting thing that my bro pointed out is how Tubman's abilities don't do anything with cities and don't grant gold nor production, so she can't rely on cities the way other leaders do. Any leverage she gains has to come from espionage or fighting. I think the only other leader with similar limitations is Ibn Battuta.

Yes and no. "Ticking off the DEI checklist" and "she took a spot that should have gone to someone more qualified" play to a broader audience than the just anti-women, anti-color, anti-trans, anti-whatever crowd. If counter arguments aren't made for why she is qualified, and about how leaders in Civ are no longer just leaders of state (not that they ever were - Gandhi), and about the sizable contingent of white male leaders who are also represented, etc., then casual viewers can easily be led to believe Tubman is an example of the evils of woke-ism.

Its probably better to assume that at least some of the objectors - and many of the observers - have valid reasons for their concerns and present, to the extent you believe them, valid reasons for why maybe they shouldn't be concerned. You won't convince everybody - you'll never convince the bots, who are the most vocal operants in Twit-land these days - but we have to have confidence that some people at least will recognize maybe this isn't the cut-and-dry situation some of the anti-Tubman crowd present it as.
Well, then, I guess I'd try saying, "They've decoupled civs from leaders. Ghengis Khan could be the leader of America in this new game." (Might be fun watching the moments while they're thinking, "Should I like that?") But anyone who says that she is "ticking off the DEI checklist" will not be open to any argument whatsoever as to why she is "qualified," I'd be willing to wager.

Moderator Action: The Civilization VII design team has taken a different approach in assigning leaders in their game as they no longer need to be governing leaders but may also be influential or key societal leaders. You may disagree with this approach and may express your dissatisfaction with their decision. However, you must do so in a civil way that does not invoke current events or political viewpoints as these have never been allowed in the gaming forums. In addition, at CivFanatics we are not interested in the drama occurring on other platforms/forums. Please leave that stuff there. Help us to keep this a place members may discuss difficult issues without the trolling and nastiness. Thank you, CFC Staff.

I like her design and think she's a great fit for america. I wish her abilities were more based on liberation and opposing hostile ideologies or something like that.

The outrage I've heard is from people who don't even play civ games so I just ignore it. There's Franklin as well so we just have an extra heroic person else with a different background. I really like the america theme as well this time around.

That would only be relevant in the Modern Age, though, and she has to be leader for the entire game.

I forgot about that. I wish ideologies ran throughout the game. Maybe merged with religion in earlier eras as well

About railroadings in this game. it is really simplified. now with Trainstations and railyard (a quarter with turntables. and the need is to build station at the next town/city. once accomplished, simple road becomes railroad. ALL OF THESE. while IRL Rail links are built BETWEEN TWO stations and maybe industrial facililties but not every city quarters, let alone farms.
And railroad tracks have wyes that didn't match the real life railways. too many curves, perpendicular switchings.

Not really what I like but rail transportation makes much more sense now. rather than another kind of road improvement, it now works much like airport transportations. with limited rail link distances, though the command is still more manual unlike Commander: The Great War. which rail transportation is done without needing to hit 'transport by rail' command.

This footage came from Benjamin Franklin segue, demonstrating how rail transportation works in this game. but it doesn't show that rail lines are connected. a working railroad needs to be connected. Not even Railyad and Train Station graphics are shown correctly. NOT EVEN when a railyard is built next to the station.

Actually this is what it should be.

That's a thorough analysis, but I'm not sure how it relates to Harriet Tubman?
