i downloaded snoopy's terrain mod, but i don't want to do a complete overhaul..
Do you not already have Civ 3 Complete?
Because that package (at least, the DL-versions from Steam, GOG, etc.) included sn00py's terrain-mod(s)* in
...Civilization3\Conquests\Scenarios\[sn00py]*\Art\Terrain\, so you wouldn't have needed to download it/them...
*I have 4 such folders in my C3C-installation: sn00py's original versions, plus the 3 'greener' variants that he also created (greener land, greener water, greener land+water).
rivers could be made more visible so that i know which side to attack an enemy city to give the defender a 50% defense bonus (unless it doesn't matter in which case its moot)
I saw that
@justanick already answered your questions about defensive bonuses in your other thread.
But do you know how to adjust the 'clean map' options? Rather than "CTRL-SHIFT-
M" (which just cleans the map), press "CTRL-SHIFT-
N" while on the main map-screen. You can then check 'Hide' on all the map-features that you don't want to see: by hiding Hills, Mountains, Forests and Jungles, but not Cities or Units, you'll be able to see
exactly where the rivers run, and therefore whether your units will be attacking a town from the same side of a river, or across it.
i just tried it out. it doesn't work for my load games, since when i load up the mod, it automatically puts me in the new game menu.
Sure, if you open (one of) sn00py's mod(s)
as a mod (i.e. via the 'Civ-Content' option), then you won't get the graphics into your games-in-progress.
OTOH, since these are purely graphical mods (i.e. they still use the unmodded Firaxis '
conquests.biq' file), starting a new game via the mod will still allow you to record scores from it, just like for a normal ('unmodded') game.
But if you want to see sn00py's (or anyone's) terrain-graphics into your games-in-progress as well, then you'd need to copy the relevant files across from the 'Scenarios' folder into your default
...Civilization3\Conquests\Art\Terrain\ folder, replacing the original files that were already there.
Before you start doing this though, you should create a backup of all the original terrain-art files, so that you can easily restore them if you copy the wrong file, or accidentally delete something (or, I suppose, if for some reason you later decide that you did actually prefer the originals after all).
One way to do this would be to
copy (
not move) your existing 'Terrain' folder to your Windows Desktop, and rename the Desktop-copy as e.g. "Terrain_ORIGINAL". Once you have a backup, then copy+paste the terrain-art files you want (according to
@Bluemofia's post above), from
...Civilization3\Conquests\Scenarios\[sn00py]\Art\Terrain\ (for sn00py's mod) to the
...\Conquests\Art\Terrain\ folder.
The game will then use those modded art-files by default, both for existing savegames (including savegames for the Firaxis Conquests, and any other Mods which don't themselves include modded terrain graphics), and also for all subsequent games started via the standard 'New Game' or 'Quick Start' options.
You can leave the backup 'Terrain_ORIGINAL' folder on your desktop for now, or you could move it (back) into the
...Civilization3\Conquests\Art\ folder (i.e. so that you now have an
...Art\Terrain\ and an
...Art\Terrain_ORIGINAL\ folder). Either way, if you want/need to reverse your changes, you can copy some/all of the files from the backup, back to the default location.
