i downloaded snoopy's terrain mod, but i don't want to do a complete overhaul.. i think im just too used to how Civ3 looks all except forest and jungle could use better differentiation. and rivers could be made more visible so that i know which side to attack an enemy city to give the defender a 50% defense bonus (unless it doesn't matter in which case its moot)

can anyone direct me how to configure snoopy's mod to my liking, or if there is a simpler terrain mod out there.

Welcome to CFC! [party]

From what I understand, you want to use the default Civ3 terrain except for Forest, Jungle, and Rivers, correct?

The files that correspond to those, are the following:
deltaRivers.pcx
grassland forests.pcx
mtnRivers.pcx
plains forests.pcx
tundra forests.pcx
waterfalls.pcx

The following files are associated with different terrain, like hills, mountains, volcanos, but if you have Jungles and Forests nearby, they will adopt the Jungled/Forested version for a more smooth appearance. The forested mountains/hills/volcanoes does not actually apply forests to them, as it is visual effects only. If you opt to use these, be aware that they will not match the regular Civ3 mountains/hills/volcanoes, as those are determined from other files.
hill forests.pcx
hill jungle.pcx
mountain forests.pcx
mountain jungles.pcx
Volcanos forests.pcx
Volcanos jungles.pcx

If you want to use purely Civ3 default graphics for mountains and forests, and Snoopy's graphics for rivers and forests and jungles, remove all other terrain except for the first set from Snoopy's terrain, and it will default to the regular Civ3 graphics.

As a note, Jungle terrain is determined in the "grassland forests.pcx" file. All the other forest related files have a space for jungles, but since the game does not allow jungles to spawn on top of plains or tundra, only on top of grassland, they are unused, and thus no graphics are associated with them.

thanks for the assistance. waterfalls.pcx wasn't in the zipped file though.

i just tried it out. it doesn't work for my load games, since when i load up the mod, it automatically puts me in the new game menu. but regardless, the jungles and mountains, hills, etc.. have quite a lot of different variations still. not something im used to. rather it look like 1 texture so i know what im looking at at a glance.

the rivers do look nice. i deleted everything but deltarivers, but all the textures still are/look modded. oh well.. i appreciate your help though. XD

Do you not already have Civ 3 Complete?

Because that package (at least, the DL-versions from Steam, GOG, etc.) included sn00py's terrain-mod(s)* in ...Civilization3\Conquests\Scenarios\[sn00py]*\Art\Terrain\, so you wouldn't have needed to download it/them...

*I have 4 such folders in my C3C-installation: sn00py's original versions, plus the 3 'greener' variants that he also created (greener land, greener water, greener land+water).

I saw that @justanick already answered your questions about defensive bonuses in your other thread.

But do you know how to adjust the 'clean map' options? Rather than "CTRL-SHIFT-M" (which just cleans the map), press "CTRL-SHIFT-N" while on the main map-screen. You can then check 'Hide' on all the map-features that you don't want to see: by hiding Hills, Mountains, Forests and Jungles, but not Cities or Units, you'll be able to see exactly where the rivers run, and therefore whether your units will be attacking a town from the same side of a river, or across it.

Sure, if you open (one of) sn00py's mod(s) as a mod (i.e. via the 'Civ-Content' option), then you won't get the graphics into your games-in-progress.

OTOH, since these are purely graphical mods (i.e. they still use the unmodded Firaxis 'conquests.biq' file), starting a new game via the mod will still allow you to record scores from it, just like for a normal ('unmodded') game.

But if you want to see sn00py's (or anyone's) terrain-graphics into your games-in-progress as well, then you'd need to copy the relevant files across from the 'Scenarios' folder into your default ...Civilization3\Conquests\Art\Terrain\ folder, replacing the original files that were already there.

Before you start doing this though, you should create a backup of all the original terrain-art files, so that you can easily restore them if you copy the wrong file, or accidentally delete something (or, I suppose, if for some reason you later decide that you did actually prefer the originals after all).

One way to do this would be to copy (not move) your existing 'Terrain' folder to your Windows Desktop, and rename the Desktop-copy as e.g. "Terrain_ORIGINAL". Once you have a backup, then copy+paste the terrain-art files you want (according to @Bluemofia's post above), from ...Civilization3\Conquests\Scenarios\[sn00py]\Art\Terrain\ (for sn00py's mod) to the ...\Conquests\Art\Terrain\ folder.

The game will then use those modded art-files by default, both for existing savegames (including savegames for the Firaxis Conquests, and any other Mods which don't themselves include modded terrain graphics), and also for all subsequent games started via the standard 'New Game' or 'Quick Start' options.

You can leave the backup 'Terrain_ORIGINAL' folder on your desktop for now, or you could move it (back) into the ...Civilization3\Conquests\Art\ folder (i.e. so that you now have an ...Art\Terrain\ and an ...Art\Terrain_ORIGINAL\ folder). Either way, if you want/need to reverse your changes, you can copy some/all of the files from the backup, back to the default location.

i do have civ 3 complete on steam. i didn't know it already included the snoopy graphical mods. the file structure is a little different than you mention.. at ......Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete\Conquests\Scenarios\, there are no other folders inside, just 16 .biq files.

i can't seem to find the folder where snoopy's mod is located so that i could do as you suggest and copy the relevant files to replace the originals with. im assuming i could just redownload the snoopy mod?

yea, i just tried it out. makes it much easier to see now where the river is in relation to a city.

hey what do you know it worked!! just downloaded the snoopy mod again and inserted the relevant files into the default ...\art\terrain\ folder. only the jungles, forest and rivers changed and nothing else, just as i wanted.

the jungles and forest are a little bit easier to differentiate between the 2. thanks for the help =)

The files are located in PTW not Conquests. They are a little outdated though I think; as since they are in the PTW folder, they do not include Conquest additions? So for you to get the latest ones from here, is a fine move.
