Will Civ 4 Vanilla and Warlords run on vista basic correctly? What are common problems with vista, when running the game?

My understanding is that vista just slows everything down due to, in part, pretty graphics. I think theres a problem with the direct x install on vista (v10) being better than the one required/on Civ 4 (v9?). The latest patch sorted it tho.

Before the patch vista didnt like it.

I dont have many probs runnin Civ4 on a vista os laptop, now that i have the patch 1.61, or whatever it is, apart from it being a bit slow. (I put unit graphics to 1 from 3 and now theres only a bit of lag on big maps.)

I dont have Warlords so cant comment.

I have never used home basic, but from what I understand about it you should be able to run civ 4 on home basic as well as any other edition of vista.

I have no problems with vista & civ4 or warlords on a fast game machine or my old laptop. It isn't any slower on my 2 machines in vista than xp.

The most common problems i've heard about are related to graphics cards and drivers that don't work 100% yet.

: Well I run Civ4 Vanilla, and Warlords on Vista Premium, and it goes fine.
:
: Didnt patch it or anything, but I did however download the latest drivers for my GC before installing any games, so that's prolly why I never experienced problems in the first place.

I have a laptop too, with Vista. I downloaded the Civilization IV demo to see how that played on my laptop and I found that when I zoomed out on the map, the more and more the game seemed to lag and slow down. It also seemed to lag during some fighting. I was thinking about buying Civilization IV and the Beyond the Sword expansion but I don't know if it will properly run. If I installed the patch and lowered the graphical settings, would I be able to run the game better?

The game works fine on Vista for me with the following two minor issues:

- the game seems to be using the wrong font in some instances. Although still readable and not *too* dissimilar from the original, it's notably more ornate and looks a bit wrong.

- although my sound card supports it, selecting EAX4 sound doesn't work so I need to use basic 4-channel sound. Creative Alchemy doesn't yet support Civ 4 and I can't get it to work with custom settings.

Neither are a big issue although I'd like to fix the fonts if there's any way of doing it.

I just got a new laptop with Vista Home Premium. When I install Civ 4 and try to run, I get the message that "there are known compatibility issues". Does anyone know how to fix that?

I,m having a problem with my download of Civ4 and patch 1.61. Iwas getting the missing D#DX9_32.dll so I went to Microsoft and downloaded the info courtesy of the threads on this site. Now when I try to start the game I get unable to locate disc. I made sure I had the right disc in and even swapped them and still have the problem any suggestions?

My laptop has this problem too. I could not get it to work under vista or xp with the drive on my laptop. Same error. Don't you just love anti-piracy crap preventing paying customers from playing their game? Ah well, at least kudos for not using starforce... That shady company has screwed up my OS twice, and i'll never buy a starforce protected game again.

Only 3 things I can think of you could try

1- make sure you have everything updated like cd drive bios etc.

2- Purchase an external usb drive.

3- go find a fixed image. The forum rules prevent me from helping you directly with the solution - as they should. No-cd's and fixed images are (and should be) banned from being linked to. We don't want civfanatics getting in trouble with take 2 or firaxis! Just remember to disable autorun for the virtual drive (for safety =P) & don't bother with hacked .exe's - images are better.

This is the only way to make a backup of your original disc to install from, and then play the game w/o having to pop your original disc in and out all the time.

I have been getting the "No CD" error as well trying to play the game on my new computer. I was finally able to get it to work this morning.

Make sure that the "Run program in compatibility mode" is unchecked. In addition, click on "Compatibility for all users" and make sure that is unchecked as well. On my machine it wasn't, and when I unchecked it, the game loaded up without the No CD error.

It is running sluggishly on Vista, but I just installed the hard drive from my old computer (with XP) and I boot up with that drive instead. I'm seriously thinking of just wiping Vista off my new machine and installing XP.

After I posted my problem I thought I would start over from scratch, So I uninstalled anything and everything that related to Civ4. I ran scan disk and defraged my drive and as mentioned by Loderunner I made sure to uncheck all compatibility modes and reinstalled the game. When the screen popped up alerting me that there may be some compatibility issues while running the game on Vista I made sure to click run game anyway. If you click check for solutions you can't get back to that screen and it will run you in circles. I started the game and it ran fine, then I installed patch version 1.74. The only difference I saw between the two were that the Movie seemed to run slower or a little choppy some I disabled it. hope this helps. Also thanks Dfi666 for your suggestions.

I also got a new PC with Vista. While the game runs much better now than it did previously (probably do to the better processor and graphics card), I do get the crashes in later stages of the game. While I have gone to the old saving after every turn route, anyone know how to avoid them all together? It does get annoying to reload every 5-10 turns.

I got no expansions and latest patch.

That's correct. I was never able to run the game in compatibility mode in Vista due to it suddenly no longer finding the CD.

As a side note, you should be able to increase performance by tweaking some of the compatibility settings (I'm not in front of my Vista machine right now and I don't recall the specifics from memory, but I believe it has something to do with desktop composition or somesuch), just make sure you're not trying to run it in XP mode or earlier.
