The new war of retribution Casus Belli brings up a concern. So you make a promise to be more careful in the future about settling near X... or about your troops being just passing by.

In neither case is it concrete as to what constitutes breaking that promise.

I settled six tiles from you, and I promise not do that again. So my next city is nine tiles from you, is that okay? Does it matter that there is a mountain range in between? A body of water?

My 4 military troops were next to your border, and I promise they are just passing by. Ten turns later my scout touches your border, is that a broken promise? How about an archer two tiles away, hunting down a barbarian?

Realistically, diplomats of the two nations have discussed their concerns and leaders have a pretty good idea as to their opposites' concerns, but in-game it seems rather vague.
 
You're so very right. I do hope they put in some warning when you're about to break a promise. Automated scouts are tricky though.
 
Not a huge deal to me, I am not exactly scared of the AI, :lol: , I care more about the diplomatic hit.
 
What the AI see as settling near them isn't distance necessarily but settling in a spot they planned to settle themselves. If there's a good spot that you think the AI might settle, there's a good chance it will be seen as breaking the promise. Any good spot near the city that triggered the promise probably will break it.
 
I also think that Promise to Settle may have the follow (Settled within 10 tiles of their cities).

The Moving Troops is tougher because it is broken even if you move away, it's misleading since it's about having Troops on their BORDERS.

But there's always the "Ignore the Request" button.. so...
 
I encountered an interesting situation in my last game. I promised Russia not to settle near their territory and I intended to keep the promise. I saw a sweet spot near my capital on the other side of my empire from the Russians. I figured that spot will not break the promise since it is so far from the nearest Russian city. Well, just before I settle my new city, Russia forward settles near my capital. Now, my new city is close enough to his new forward settled city, that I get the "you broke a promise" notification. That is a dastardly move, Peter the Great!

We are talking about the diplomatic hit, no? Don't think anybody here is afraid of the AI. :crazyeye: But sometimes I like to challenge myself by actually keeping good relations, it's harder than warmongering. :p
 
Yes, it looks as though the various alliances are the way to go except fir civs you actually want war with. So if you are getting into wars with civs you meant to be peaceful/allied with, it works against your goals.

This does not describe a functional mechanic.
 
I usually don't make promises unless it's easy to keep. If they're close, they're dead anyways, so if they want an excuse to suicide, that's fine by me.

Well, I declared war and conquered all of Russia's cities so Peter was really just pre-settling cities for me. MUHAHA!
 
Did they fix breaking promises you didn't make?

I don't recall that ever being a thing. But you only suffer a penalty for "refusing to make a promise" if you just ignore them. Nobody else will care about it.

The troops on borders is stupid though. A few scouts on auto explore can cause it and the game doesn't tell you how far away you have to go. Yeesh. Sometimes they even accuse you of it when you have open borders with them, making it almost useless to even have.
 
You can ask them to not settle as close too, as well as not convert and spy on you.

I'd like a troops too close demand too, but I'm sure the AI isn't smart enough to handle it.

the Ai is smart enough to use it the border demand is just to sensetive 2 scouts can trigger it and even units INSIDE YOURE OWN BORDERS can trigger it

There needs to be some amendment made. to make sure that a mockery like that can't happen.
