the computer ai is useless for sea so you dont really need much of a navy.

air is pretty easy just make sure you take out there anti aircraft guns because they really hurt if you dont then bomb the heck out of them. land you want shield units up front well thats what i like to call them anyway behind you want seige units unless your the chinese in which case use the choku guys instead,

then to the sides you want horsemen.

4-6 long swordsmen followed by 2-4 seige units with 3-4 horsemen to the sides and upgrade as you go.

dont bother with aircraft before you have tanks and or mech infantry.

after this 5-10 bombers following this a forward line of artilery/ rocket artilery and tanks +mech inf is very powerfull.

note shield units is units able to take a bit of hitting eg long swordsmen.

On land, let AI break against your defenses, charge.

At sea, doesn't matter since the AI can't touch you on sea.

Air? Stealth Bombers are probably the greatest thing ever.

Nucear? Nuke first and nuke often.

A few random tips...

Nuclear War: if opponent's capital is too far away to nuke, settle a city close enough then rebase the nuke. Become like the annoying AI if need be, that places a city on a 1 tile island. If all the land is taken up, conquer a CS that is close enough.

Sea: get barracks + armory, then take the amphibious promotion so your soldiers don't have to land to attack cities effectively.

More nuclear war: if there is a tough city with lots of defenders, drop the first bomb and then start moving like you are going to take the city with your troops. The opponent should move more troops in thinking the nuking is done, then you drop the second nuke.

Even more nuclear war: apparently nuking a city destroys their nukes. Put your nukes in position so that you can launch all at once, taking out the cities with nukes. You can't always get all their nukes, so just accept that your civ will become happier after they retaliate and reduce the population of your periphery cities.

I'm actually in the process of writing the article for modern units for the Civ5 War Academy, which is under construction. It's hard to say what the 'best strategies' are, because as I'm finding, there is a lot to write about! When talking nuclear, the key is to get in a first strike and deprive your enemy of leveraging their nuclear weapons.

No matter how you slice it, artillery is the game changer in warfare. It changes the whole nature of warfare in CiV. I've tried to siege cities with canons and rifles and got shredded, even by a lacking AI. Once I can get artillery up and running, I can take nearly any city regardless of location. Moreover, you can shred the defenders with 3-4post artillery siege units as you approach the city, so it is lightly defended by the time you get your melee units next to it. In many cases, I will accept even peace treaties until I can get artillery up and running and then restart the war with an entirely different result.

Try using battleships, after the patch, they are awesome for taking down costal cities and capitols. A few turns of training, and you can have dual attack battleships off doome. 3-4 will take down any city in only a few turns, then take it with a single land unit.

Art and bombers are the key in modern warfare. Use them to soften up a city, then take it with a mech infantry or arm.

Another tactics. Build paratroopers in a city that can upgrade them, get the shock and cover upgrade. Land them next to a city, bomb it, then take it the next turn. The cover takes the sting out of the city defense, the paras rebuild quickly in the now captured city. You can mix them with a few having the medic upgrade.

In my first game with Emperor, and playing as America, I found out that building military academy and spamming 6-8 B17 bombers, you can take pretty much any city no matter what. I took 100 strength Memphis in turn with bombers and paratroopers.
With the academy they can get logistics (1 additional attack per turn) and few hits to the enemy and you can get Air repair too.
I didn't do war that much before the B17, but once I got them, I produced them like mad and went to town. In 40 years the world was mine :).
