i am concerned about combat results and experiencing some problems.

when i fight i always seem to loss or either win with energy in the red, for example

a veteran cavalry against veteran knights in a desert square (knights not fortified) and i lose and not take any health off him. When the kinghts attack my unit they win easily (my unit is fortified)

this is stupid and should not happen

also infantry attacking warriors (not veteran and not fortified in mountains, jungles or forests) either lose or win in the red.

i attacked with veteran cavalry against veteran pikeman and i lost

in civilization 3, units get 50% defence bonus for being in a city and 25% fortified and even 10% for the ground the city is situated. This means that defense is too good. I attacked a whole army of 3 veteran cavalry against 1 veteran pikeman and i just won and the army was in the red.

why should a pikeman beat a cavalry if its in a city and fortified. Cavalry around the time of the american civil war would not have lost to pikeman, it is unrealitic?

what was civ 2 defence bonus?

(I find combat results in civ 2 are better and more realistic)

is there anyway of suiting this out. A patch etc.

maybe changing it to civ2 way? (how would you do that?)

cheers thanks

p.s. anyone experiencing this or something similar?

Be prepared for some pretty bazaar combat results. You will eventually learn to deal with them, and even minimize them by using good tactics.

Reload, and then use up the bad roll by either attacking with a unit you don't care about, using artillery, or simply wait until the next turn. A string of numbers seems to be generated at the beginning of every turn, and is saved with your savegame. You have to get through that roll somehow.
