How many old fart wargamers here? The little squares of cardboard on a map kind or the miniatures kind. If there are few of you, I will deign to here from young fart wargamers also.

Well, I'm one. First two wargames I had were Panzerblitz and Luftwaffe, started back in the early seventies.

I don't think there are many of us around these days....

I was late in on the scene, but I was able to indulge in the little paper squares for a few years in the early 90s, as well as a few minatures for AD&D and derivatives.
Those were the good old days, though, war games. Despite the advantages of a computing experience, it cannot quite replicate the wondrous feel of paper wargaming.
Risk, Squad Leader, Kingmaker - we will not see your type again. I salute thee.

LOL, yeah most of us know a few of those. One gamer here in S A kept a mortar and pestle handy for offending dice. Myself, I would sacrifice leftover pizza to the dice god and he just loved me. I am known among many gamers for "Victory through better dice". It did not hurt to be smarter than most of them as well. that really burned them, though, was the remarkable accuracy with which I could called their roll before they made it. Often I just knew what that roll was going to be (well above twice the random average). So remember, SACRIFICE TO THE DICE GOD!

Did I mention that I love the spellchecker?

Count me in. I was an early subscriber to Strategy & Tactics magazine. I owned dozens of games by Avalon Hill and SPI. Back in those days, I would (figuratively) spit on games like risk and stratego.

I was a demon with Panzerblitz and later, Panzer Leader.

Those days are gone now.

Well I have only played one such game in my life (and still do with my father). That's Waterloo from Avalon Hill.

Anybody knows of it?

Yep, I have Waterloo here and have even played it in the not too distant past. I am familier with all the games named above.

Hmmm... I started with War at Sea in about 1984 (I was 8) and moved on to Tactics II. Ever since then I have played all of the games above and some more: Third Reich, Squad Leader, Victory in the Pacific, Midway, Battle of the Bulge, D-Day, Republic of Rome, BlackBeard, Bismarck, Jutland, Wooden Ships Iron Men, the list goes on and on...

But unfortunately wargaming as I knew it growing up has no real future. Games like Stratego (yech) and Axis & Allies are the norm these days. I can only hope that people play those games, and then get interested enough to play other, more advanced games.

As for AD&D, I played in a group that was together religiously for about 6 years. Every Thursday night was AD&D night. I had a 15th level Cavalier, and my buddy had a 19th level mage (with psionics, 1st edition rules!)

As for dice, I frankly miss squeezing the hell out of them, threatening them, or doing whatever I had to do to them to ensure a good roll. But since I am blessed with natural luck anyway

, I never had too much trouble with the dice.

But last but not least, if you have no luck, you can always play Diplomacy (The greatest boardgame ever made).

I only wish that there were some viable Play by E-mail options for some of these old games, so I could test the old farts skills a bit
biggrin.gif
. Or maybe learn a thing or two???

P.S. If anybody is interested in Diplomacy over the net, and has the computer game (the new horrible AI version), catch me on ICQ or drop me a PM. I am VERY interested in getting a group of people together for a game.

I'm so tired of being tired... Sure as night will follow day... Most things I worry about, never happen anyway...

In think that there are PBEM options for a lot of the oldies.. or something closely resembling them. I have seen sites devoted to such. A good place to start your research would be Grognards.com.. use the links & go from there. Wished I had more time for it.
The best H2H wargame that I have ever played is The Russian Campaign by AH. Have a brand new copy, not even out of the shrink wrap.

I've played old Risk and old Axis and Allies.

You mean that today risk is not the same as the old version? How was it?

I can't say that I am one of you, but I have many times made with my uncle our own board War Games as a childern...My uncle was a little younger....but the best Civ Player I've ever matched against and I would consider myself atleast a MASTER.
I was going to play a great boadWar Game with some friends I had met in my previous city, although the name ecsapes me the game was from Avalon Hill and has not yet been mentioned, but it just didn't develop....
There is a person that I KNOW in my heart has played them, and that I personally Miss vERY MUCH --- Algernon Pondlife WHERE ARE YOU???? Come back and visit man!

Yes, I still play them face to face. I found some opponents. I play Squad Leader, House Divided, Panzer Blitz and Leader, Across five aprils, Kremlin, Advanced Civilization (played yesterday again. Ended second again: grumpfff....) Britania, HOTW, Lodon's burning, Great patriotic war etc.

Just putting my marker in here. No time to compose a helpful reply right now. I must have about fifty games but I've almost only ever played solitaire. My first was Decline and Fall - an object lesson on the meaning of "balanced gameplay"- my favourite are Sturm Nach Osten, Imperium Romanum and one of my Kasserine games (Iforget the exact name just now).

There are sites dealing with everything about these games (I'll try to sort them out for you tomorrow) and I have the Aide de Camp ll software which can make virtually any turn based game possible by email - but I've only just got it and haven't figured it out yet.

I still find maps scrolling on the screen are utterly inferior to poring over the real paper version on a table and computer games seem to drive me to play without real thought and planning.

Ah, you just haven't played Waterloo until you've SPI's "Wellington's Victory." (Though TSS has always been one of my all-time favorites.)

I am just wondering why it is so difficult to find face to face opponents for gamers like us. I took me some time. Here in the netherlands we have like a nationwide gaming club called Ducosim and there are other clubs like Casus Belli and so on. Don't you have the same in your country?

How about: opponents wanted in a magazine called "the General" or "Strategy and tactics" which all of you wargamers should know? I even found some sites on the net about just finding opponents. It shouldn't be that hard.

Wow! All these old names from the past. I don't really play any board wargames anymore. It's too easy to save a game on the computer and restart it later. Anyone ever try to keep a big game map set up with counters "until we get to finish it"? I used to think cats were a challange to this but kids are the toughest!

I still have well used copies of Squad Leader, Third Reich, and 2nd Fleet on a bookshelf, collecting dust. What are the odds that they'll ever be used again???

a. Try to find a single friend who loves boardgames/wargames and hates cats.

b. Give your wive/kids 100$, tell them to go and do something nice, because daddy is going to play one of his wicked games again. If the wive understands you, she'll do it.

c. Finish a game in one day.

d. Hire a bungalow for a weekend, buy beer, cola, chips and other nasty food. Collect some friends and play a monster game.

I must say I'am in a happy position: my girlfriend loves boardgames (well, not wargames). A good friend of mine has a lovely wive and two little daughters. Sometimes the oldest (three years old) comes along to watch a game. She knows she isn't allowed to touch anything. Last weekend the wive took the children to a childrens-farm. They had a nice day and daddy also because he did play Advanced Civilization...

Hey Hey I'm one too...

I think the first one I played was RISK. we got a copy of the original game with wooden pieces.

Does anyone remeber the game torpedo run?

Also ccan't forget the classic Statego.

My favorite is Axis and Allies though.

Now all my war games have been converted to computer..Steel panthers, civ, panzer general,etc..
