Warlords and By the Sword are gimped

China only got better. Though both are Protective now, an Archery UU gives it Drill I. The CHo-Ko-Nu already gets, what, 1 first strike, so adding Drill II gives it 2. Add in its strength and melee bonuses; man! China is almost overpowered!

Also, in BtS you can play with unrestricted leaders, connecting any leader to any civ. And since all vanilla trait-combinations exist in BtS you can still play with the same leader-traits+civilization combination. The only difference will be of course that you will face new leader+civ combinations at the same time.

But there's also editing the save file to replace a trait if you want to keep the rest of the players "classical".

I wish there was a setting to change only your own leader/civ combination as I've been wanting the ability to play for example old Tokugawa wo messing up the opponents. How do you edit the save file for something like this?

Just go into the Beyond the Sword Folder and find the Assets file. On my computer it's off this root - C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Assets\XML\Civilizations. Open the CIV4LeaderHeadInfo file and find the name of the leader you want to modify (Cntrl - F and enter the leader name usually is the fastest). Scroll down when you find him/her and find the tags labelled "<TraitType>". Modify it to what you like and save. Load the game and check the civilopedia. The traits should be changed according to your modifications.

Napoleon is great. China I agree got nerfed as did Russia. However, Russia is still very good and China can be good, but Mao definitely isn't as appealing as before. However, now there are new fun leaders to play like Dutch and Carthage and stuff.

Thanks a ton man! I might just do some permanent changes according to how I view history.. I'm getting bored with the choices anyhow, but I guess some exceptions in the name of balance may be necessary. I think the romans should have at least one financial leader but it might be overpowered. :)

Well I just got BtS for Xmas (my eldest is a little angel and i won't hear a word said against her for a day or 2  ) and I'm currently playing as the Dutch.
So some of the leaders got changed for balance, there are new overpowered leaders to choose from, and with additions like the Apolistic Palace and corporations the games much more interesting.
