Warmongering without falling behind in science?

I'm working on my early warfare, which is probably my biggest area for improvement. So I fire up with Boudica, warmonger supreme, but I ran into a problem. While I was taking enemy cities, I started falling way behind in technology. I was still winning, but their advanced units started slowing me down, and I couldn't seem to get back in the swing of research after I realized I was falling behind.

What am I doing wrong?

Falling behind is natural. Once you've finished the war though, you can easily recover by building wealth and developing all your new land. Because land is power, you'll quickly shoot forward. If you don't have Currency or Code of Laws yet, you can build research to get those, then build wealth and courthouses to bring your expenses back in line.

Post some screen shots and a save. Its hard to tell for sure what your problem is but it can reasonably be inferred that you are taking cities but not developing them. After rushing a neighbor, most players typically enter a peaceful period of developing their land. I am just gonna go out on a limb and say you likely have nowhere near enough workers.

Currency is very helpful with a lot of cities. Another trick is to get Alpha, then accept a ten-turn peace treaty in exchange for your victim's techs.

Early rushes or worker raids are usually included in my playbook, but I've definitely been a big fan of beelining alpha and currency before engaging in major wars of conquest. With these you can repeatedly DoW and demand techs and gold for peace. Keep wars short and WW won't be so bad, allowing you to keep citizens working and gold/beakers coming in.

Second to that, espionage can be a good way to keep up in tech. An early GreatSpy in an enemy capital can be a great boon to your own "research" ;)
