Warrior Monks

That was not the AI , that was the guy who got his posterior handed to him by Amtrak ;)
I've definitely seen AI Rome to produce warrior monks in at least one single player game. probably more.
Non actually using them - maybe too late - but a number of monks kept walking around Rome.

Has anyone tried them with the Zulu? I think there might be a synergy there.

That is so rock and roll.

Well done sir. Well done.

The AI always takes them first, yeah.. and then proceeds not use them, ever. :crazyeye:

I think this is deliberate, so the player can build them. Basically, the AI spreads the warrior monk religion to you, and then you get to build them.

It means your religion still wasn't first.
Build Stonehenge instead of holy site, it you succeed (it's not very difficult with about 6 shields per turn), it's guarantees being first.

Got them finally. Really, REALLY didn't want to play a Marathon game just to get the monks achievement, so I tried Epic or vice versa. Whichever is a slower game, but not the longest. I'm inching towards level 3, but they are already struggling to beat opponents. This is going to be hard just as people said.

I got mine off a regular (standard speed) game. Consider warring for the wars sake, I can get free promotions just from not letting a city state get conquered. Also, don't rely on them solely, build archers as well and more than two monks.

Gah! I'm dying! Finally played a game where I got them, made a serious push for the achievement by attacking a CS over and over again, FINALLY got to level four... no achievement. Read the details more closely and realized you have to level four times, meaning I have to get all the way to level FIVE. That's a ridiculous amount of experience!

Just an idea and shot-in-the-dark, but I'm thinking Mali + Warrior monks is an interesting idea.

Mali gets huge amounts of faith (almost for free) and discounts on faith purchasing with their UD.

Mali could rush a HS and work the project without any production loss for a quick religion and purchase units as needed. They are (almost) guaranteed 1st pantheon (with enough desert) for desert folk-lore/earth goddess/etc. They may not get the 1st religion, but have a really good shot to purchase their GP.

I do see constructing the shrine and temple being an issue with limited production, but those could be purchased eventually.

Quite a few governors could help Mali get there.

Pingala's +1 culture and 100% GPP promotions could speed them along the culture track and double the HSs GPs quite early.

Rena's Forest management and Tax could help net enough gold to purchase a shrine + temple easier.

Moksha's patron saint (x2 promotions on Warrior monks) is nice, but costs way too many titles to be useful early.

Otherwise, they could flood the map with warrior monks while retaining their gold.

Yeah, four promotions, not level four.

I finally got this achievement last weekend, playing on warlord difficulty with the Mapuche. I took the crusader belief and was lucky to get two foes with medieval golden ages, so after converting their cities, I just sent waves of only warrior monks (which could handle 50+ strength cities at this point) and finally got one with three promotions. Then I completed the terra cotta army and gave him a fourth promotion. :)

Good luck in your quest!

Dunno about monks (or other melee units), but if you managed to promote a crossbowman or frigate to level four and keep being in war - that's extremely easy to make level five.

Isn't there a Great General who gives a free promotion? I know there is a Great Admiral who does.
