Warrior Monks

So I had to wait for the Domrey Elephants.
Long wait. Really need a siege discount policy card.

Honestly, if you can surround the city and put it under siege, you can take level 40 walls without waiting on the elephants.

I don't see where they synergy would come from. WMs are listed as 'other' and not even the Agoge policy only affects melee and ranged.

Corps and armies come earlier for the Zulu, which should help the WM stay relevant longer and accrue more experience, getting to their +combat strength promotions more easily.

I was just reading about the Zulu and they seem to upgrade to Corps and Armies when taking a city but you still need the relevant policy. By the time you have that policy you should have a buncha monks to combine anyway.

You can also train corps and armies early with their unique Encampment.

I was hoping this was true but only see this online... but still haven't gotten the expansion.

The Ikanda is a unique district of the Zulu civilization in Civilization VI: Rise and Fall. It replaces the Encampment.

  • Effects:
    • Lower Production cost (27 vs. 54).
    • +1 Great General point per turn.
    • +1 Housing
    • Acquires Walls and Ranged Strike along with the City Center.
    • Spawns all Land Military Units the city builds.
    • Gives its parent city the ability to build Land Units with only 1 count of the relative Strategic resource
    • Provides XP bonus to units built in it once Buildings have been added to the District
    • Specialists provide +1 Production and Cultureeach
    • 25% faster training of Corps and Armies
    • Allows Corps and Armies to be built outright

It's the last item, when combined with Shaka's Amabutho LUA. It allows you to straight build Corps and Armies early without the need for additional Encampment buildings.

Has anyone tried them with the Zulu? I think there might be a synergy there.

As I see it, warrior monks are a distraction for Shaka as they have better units to focus (Impi & knights) without needing to invest in holy sites, shrines, and temples.

Shaka's early corp do that synergy as it widens the window warrior monks are effective, but I feel the production used on holy sites and its buildings could have been better spent.

If playing religious, I'd spend the faith on builders/settlers in a GA Monumentality dedication instead of on warrior monks. Upon founding a religion, I'd rather pickup Jesuit education or Choral music to expedite Mercenaries.

I'd only think about warrior monks if I was converted by or conquering into a civ/city with a warrior monk religion.

Warrior monks have the same issue as Okihtcitaws in that they require exp to keep relevant instead of unit upgrades as the eras progress.

Okay, wanted to try warrior monks, but I'm unable to get them. As Khmer, I've got a holy site. I built a Shrine and a Prasat on it. (I've also got a Stupa). When I go to purchase with faith, they aren't an option. I can't make a Temple, right? The Prasat replaces the Temple as I understand it. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Do I need to spend an Apostle and get a particular belief to unlock them? What? I didn't see the option when I chose my initial beliefs.

I don't remember if it's available in the initial beliefs or when you spend an apostle to evangelize belief. It's very possible the AI chose this belief, they seem to like it for some reason.

You need it as a belief in your religion, and it's a favorite of the AI, so can be hard to get, especially at higher levels. Or build the wonder that gives 4 warrior monks.

What? I didn't see the option when I chose my initial beliefs.
It's an initial followers belief. Look at the other religions of the world and probably an AI already took it.

The Warrior monk belief is actually rather popular with the AI so nabbing it isn't always possible.

Replayed the game, making Holy Site top priority, but it didn't matter. Monks were not an option when it came to choosing my initial ability.

It means your religion still wasn't first.
Build Stonehenge instead of holy site, it you succeed (it's not very difficult with about 6 shields per turn), it's guarantees being first.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the AI pretty much always takes Warrior Monks as it first belief. It's pretty damn rare that it's available, I'm guessing you're gonna have to found the first Religion.

Aaand since we're on the topic... religion and pantheons still need a rework as far as I'm concerned. Some choices are just flat out way better than others (don't mean warrior monks here, I find them quite poor), and the AI always go for the same things which is just rather boring.

The AI always takes them first, yeah.. and then proceeds not use them, ever. :crazyeye:
