Watcha Writin'?

Something happened in my fanfic that I seriously was not expecting. But suddenly it makes a whole bunch of other things make sense. I love it when I lose control of my story a little bit and it goes to surprising places.

Current streak: 20 days.

Any opinions on chapter length? I've seen somewhere that 2000-6000 words is the sweet spot.

If at first you don't succeed, fail, fail again. :sad: I took a huge chunk out of the middle of "Stealing Time" with the idea if writing in both direction. :shake: Didn't work. Again. I'm giving up. :aargh:
 
I finished my second chapter. It came in at around 5,400 words. :)

I don't plan to post anything until I've got more of it finished, though. Abandoned fanfics make me sad.
 
It wasn't. I meant it in general.
 
Now you have me remembering my Scarlet Pimpernel fanfic crossover with Dante's Inferno, backwards.

In Paris, the Scarlet Pimpernel drops into the sewer, i.e., the River of Poop which is IIRC, the 7th Ring of Hell. As the Scarlet Pimpernel proceeds in his escape, he goes to the 6th Ring, 5th Ring etc. Eventually, the First Ring was supposed to take him back to England. However, in an adventure story, tension is supposed to be ever increasing. With my story proceeding backwards through the Rings, they were ever less threatening. The story became ever more boring and eventually was abandoned.
 
I was rummaging through abandoned stories when I came across my twice-abandoned "Not Just Another Fairy Tale Wedding," a rom-com. Rom-coms aren't really my thing, but this wasn't the problem. I couldn't get either beginning quite right. :badcomp:

Today I learned that Rom-com novels have very short minimum word lengths:i.e. 50,000 words. Because my novels tend to be too short, Not Just Another Fairy Tale Wedding might be just the thing for my next novel. :thumbsup:

I need to get back to "Yule" if I'm going to have it ready as a Christmastime short story. Here's my problem: The Vikings and Native Americans are fighting. I need a way to stop them from fighting without either side losing because after all this is a happy, happy Christmas tale. :xmas:
I still can't figure out do do with the gnomes in my Count of Monte Banco novel. :badcomp:
 
My current writing streak is 27 days.

I love it when my stories start running away on me and kind of start writing themselves. For example, I was going over one of the older scenes I'd written so that I could repurpose it. And then I could see it in my imagination, and I started noticing details in it that I hadn't noticed before. Then I realized what had happened in the scene was actually a lot different than what I had originally intended!
 
Thanks. It's a bit tough at first. But then after a while you start to get momentum and it becomes easier.

I've written close to 9,500 words on my new draft. :)
 
Me, being me, has wandered off course again. While looking through GOG, I came across Majesty, a RTS game which caught my eye years ago. One of the many characters was the tax collector, an individual who goes from place to place, picking up tax money to bring to the Treasury.

I wondered how he would work as an RPG class. He would have to be fanatically loyal, or else he would embezzle his charge. As he travels alone through the hinterlands, he would have to be a fearsome fighter to repel the marauders his oodles of tax money would attract.

600 words in.
 
I'm still chugging away. Going to keep my daily goal at 300 words a day, though. :) According to Scrivener, my current draft is ~10,500 words.

I'm not planning to do it either, but I found it and thought someone else might find it useful. :)
 
Just submitted another story to the Writers of the Future Contest, all 6150 or so words. It's been 3/4 of a year since I submitted my previous one, though this one really took me 6 months of slowly progressing.

Here's hoping for something, although I'm not really expecting anything.

In a macabre coincidence, I just received notice from them that "Come Hither, Springtime," the bittersweet love story which I submitted to them last quarter won nothing. :sad: The honorable mention I received last December for "Bethlehem Delictim" sent my hopes for future success soaring, but since then, nada. :(

Currently, I'm fretting over this quarter's submission, "Silver Slippers O'er a Golden Road," the retelling of "The Wizard of Oz" from the silver slippers' point of view, and I'm stuck on my planned submission for next quarter, "Yule" a Viking Christmas story.:badcomp:
 
I feel like congratulations are not really in order at this point, but good luck to you too!
 
I'm halfway through chapter three of my fanfic. :)

I guess I should start looking for a beta-reader. I have a friend who's checking the grammar (I hate tenses), but she doesn't know much of the games.

I'm seriously rethinking this. :think: One thing that was stopping me was my aversion to grinding out 1700 words per day. :badcomp: Some days this won't be possible, and it just sounds too mechanical :borg: Then I came across this woman's vlog:
5,000 words her first day. 5,000 words her last day. Taking days off in the middle. :sleep:This sounds more like me. :hug: I did some research and, although NaNiWriMo encourages starting with a new work, this isn't a absolute rule as long as already-written words are not submitted.

I'm 4,000 words into Mammon's Throne, but have been stuck for months. :cringe: Maybe I'll go with this.
