One good old wargame is Fields of Glory by microprose. There you can also find many infos about the commanding officers of the divisions and corps as well as about Blücher or Wellington or Napoleon.

And your article actually points out the interesting fact that prior to modern communications systems, battlefield commanders really had quite limited means of controlling the action or often of even finding out what was going on. It all had to be pieced together afterwards from often very conflicting info.
