Construction begins on NY's Freedom Tower

NEW YORK (Reuters) - One day after resolving issues between a developer and landowners, bulldozers rumbled into a giant pit on Thursday to begin construction of the glittering Freedom Tower skyscraper meant to symbolize New York's resilience to the September 11 attacks.

Rebuilding at the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan began 4 1/2 years after the Twin Towers were destroyed by suicide hijackers who flew passenger planes into them.

The 1,776-foot (540-meter) tower will be among the tallest in the world.

"We are not going to just build low in the face of a war against terror," New York Gov. George Pataki said. "We are going to soar to new heights and reclaim New York's skyline."

Maybe I'm just easily amused but for some reason I take immense pride in the fact that an even bigger and more beautiful tower is replacing the old twin towers.

Kind of a statement that not only did we survive your sucker punch attack, but we are coming back even stronger.

Agreed. This is great that they're "rebuilding" the towers! What, exactly, will the Freedom Tower be used for? Commerce? Business? It can't be just a giant tower, can it?

Now, if they only did something about that name...
And what would you, Mighty Warpus, like to call it? The "Screw-You-Jihadist Tower"? :mischief:

Yeah right, its only been five years of doing absolutely nothing with a huge gaping whole in the middle of the city...the entire Empire State Building took less than two years to complete from start to finish.

We'll see how long it takes before some other group has a problem and decides it needs to get its' opinions thrusted onto the site with all the money there is to be made there.

Until they blow this one up too
Who is "they?" Quite an out of place comment...

I'll bet that it took longer to plan and permit than that. How long did the first WTC take to get done?

Glad they changed the plans to something aesthetically pleasing from the ass-ugly drawings they showed us a couple of years ago.

Anything but a tacky cliche.
Its only a tacky cliche because Bush seems to use it to equal good. That and it seems to be every fifth word out of his mouth.:(

I agree a better name could be had.

Well then we will have to just blow up that one they are building in iran or some other muslim country then if thats the case!

We can use Bush and he can strap bombs to himself.

This one is bigger and better! And it will reach into the heavens themselves! It will be an affront to God! Until He decides to confound all of our languages!

Sorry, but that was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the thread title . . .

bwahahaha, I kinda thought of that too Eran :)

I like this tower...i'll be sure to visit once its finished. I like the fact that its going to be 1,766 feet too....clever.

Construction of the World Trade Center began in 1966, of the towers the first opened in 1970, the second in 1972 officially opened in 1973.

Thanks, I was thinking inception to completion though. Didn't it take a long time to get off the ground?

I'm also glad they killed the "Freedom Museum" that was going to be there. What a bunch of PC thuggery.

“Freedom Towers” sounds so lame. Can’t we call it the “Citadel of Pain” or the “Towers of the Great Satan?”
