We don't need no stinkin' markets

Even in games where I'm running 90-100% science, I'll still usually build banks in my 3-5 best cities, at least past the mid-game. In those cities, it doesn't take that long to build them. On the last turn of research for every tech, I'm going to turn down the science slider, so those 3-5 will more than pay for their upkeep costs, even if they're a loss on every other turn.

I have modified the game a bit, and using the Pyramids, Sun Tzu's Art of War, and the Temple of Artemis as a basis, have Smith's Trading Company set to put a marketplace in every city. I build them before that, but it does simplify matters when I take a city, as normally, I am not going to war much before the Industrial Age. Probably should increase the cost a bit, but for now, the cost is comparable to the other Wonders. I try to locate and develop my cities so that they are what I call one-unit cities with accelerated production, in that they will produce ANY unit in one turn, exceptions being the Tactical Nuclear Missile and the ICBM. I should state that I have town size set at 8 and city size set at 16, which helps quite a bit with production without becoming unwieldy as I find the settings in Turkhan's excellent Test of Time scenario.

i build markets in almost every city. combined with luxuries, they solve happniess, which means lower lux slider, more cash, more research, more winning

if one of my towns can't reach size 6, then no need for it. cash rush them in corrupt places after the usual library/temple + harbor

as for banks, core cities get them. generally, if it takes 12 turns or less to build from scratch, then it gets a bank. 15+ turns, forget it

same for stock exchanges, core cities get them

when you hit late industrial age, if you're playing that long, your core cities become ****ing monsters, no matter who you play as

But when and where? How far can a city get from the capitol and still 'deserve' a market?

I have a game with outlying cities that are getting quite a good size but they are fully corrupt... should they get a market to quell the unrest?
good idea
