Has anyone ever seen the Roman empire fight the Byzantine Empire, or had it happen with unrestricted leaders. I've had two unrestricted leader games with Alex leading Byzantium (huge numbers of Cataphracts)
I've just had the roman and byzantine empires battle in three of my games, I was wondering if anyone else has seen this happen or fought the Romans as the Byzantines or the Byzantines as the Romans.

The closest I got was spawning as Rome and I wiped out the Byzantines to the North. Constantinople ended up being a better city and became the power of my empire despite Rome being the official capital.

I then got to the neighboring landmass which was seperated by a narrow strait. Then I ran into the Ottomans that got huge and Persia peacevassaled to them. They had a great spawn with tons of land and I couldn't keep up with them. Fortunately they also had to contend with warring with Arabia. Eventually after a bunch of pointless back and forth on the Ottoman's side which did nothing but ruin my economy, I won due to UN diplo mostly thanks to taking their cities on another landmass.

It was one of the weirder victories since I had built the UN but both Arabia and Ottomans were bigger. So the only way to win was to simultaneously be allies with Arabia but make sure they weren't bigger than the Ottomans while shrinking the Ottomans so they wouldn't have enough votes. Basically, I had to damage the Ottomans so they lose to me, but not enough that Arabia becomes the candidate.

Yeah now that you mention it, one of my more fun/memorable games had this happen. It's one of few that I remember mainly due to a stone cold back stab of Ghandi, I protected him in the BCs against Ragnor as a buffer/trade partner only to eat him later, he was just too juicy. I felt really bad about it though.

I was Justi and I had an good hammer/commerce capital and a second city that was all flood plain/green cottages (and I had the health to handle the FPs). My tech rate was strong and after dealing with Ragnor early I built up a good cataphract army and unleased, Ghandi first then everyone else.

Julius was my toughest opponent, I remember I had to halt my advance to tech up to Airships/Cavs then I broke him and rolled right through everyone else to a domination victory.

Good times, I never thought about it in the context of your OP nor did I really get that Byzantine was the eastern roman empire. It would be cool to have a scenario map built around this concept.

I play unrestricted leaders on huge maps with a few extra AIs and Romans + Byzantines in the same game is fairly common.
