WH Discussion Thread

I'm a bit like that too.

I wouldn't be against the Ranger having "detect invisible", but of course all this depends on how the AI reacts to invisible units.

if testing finds that the AI will build invisible units relentlessly, while ignoring "proper" units, then it would probably remain how it is, and no changes would be needed.

You guys don't know what I and mrtn discussed about last night :) (concerning the fact that dwarfs don't have wizards).

mrtn can correct me, if my memory is flawed, but this is what we talked about:
- I will make runesmith (that will upgrade to runelord), which will have the "detect invisible"-ability, have only the defensive bombard, and I also suggested that it would have radar. These units would be available at magic and high magic (altough dwarfs don't use magic in the common way, they are a bit more practical with it). I also thought of a cool attack animation: a throwing hammer (like Thor throws his hammer, Mjolnir) ;) .
- The "see invisible" ability will propably be added to scout type units (like dwarf scouts, waywatchers, and maybe on other assassin-type units too that "can be deployed as scouts") and some monsters (atleast dragons and such). And maybe wolfhounds/direwolfs/fleshounds - maybe.

I mentioned also that I might do some other units for the mod too (yeah, a real surprise that was  ).

Also, what if the invisible assassins would be available only from buildings (builds assassin every 20th turn or so...), so that way the invisible units wouldn't mess up the whole world ;)

Silly boy  . That runelord will be using the same gfx as the runesmith (only the pedia-pic will be different - JUST LIKE all other mages in the game).

I meant buildings (they should be expensive though, since afterall they would generate terrifying units).
And I thought that the building would be using some generic "house" graphic(since I believe there aren't many free slots left from the 256 available) - and I believe that the place of assassin training should look as modest as po. The names could be something like you suggested:
DE: bloody cauldron (or noble house)
Skaven: house of Eshin
Nippon: Art school
WE: House of wild hunt
Araby: Tobacco room
Lizardmen: Longpipe house
... ;)

What about for Cathay ... Den of Opium Dreaming
I suspect those assassins would be quite ineffective, what with the flying pink elephants blocking their view and their tendency to giggle while stalking their prey...

:lol::lol:

no, there isn't one for cathay

instead of Art School for Nippon, how about Ninjitsu Collage?

I'd prefer art school over ninjitsu college. ninjitsu is too much of a giveaway ;)

But we're gettin ahead of ourselves... we should wait what mrtn (or mr.do) thinks.

 Nice one Wolfhart

However the origin of the word assassin is from hashish :p

Wiki says ... the word assassin derives from the Arabic word حشّاشين (haššāšīn), or Hashshashin, an Islamic sect of militants founded by Hasan-i Sabbah who were supposedly avid hash-eaters. This is also the view expressed by Charles Baudelaire in his Artificial Paradises of 1857.

Is there a WH reason that not all Civs have a stealth unit?

The Revenge of the Spelling Nazi
He's back, and he wants your letters...
Ninjutsu, not jitsu. :scan:

I think that they should come from Small Wonders, not buildings.

Cauldron of Blood sounds good. The other names could use a bit of work. ;)

Chameleons could maybe come from Invisible Spawning or something, that could maybe even use the ordinary spawning pool gfx.
The waywatchers aren't connected to the wild hunt, AFAIK.
aaglo forgot about the Sneaky Gitz, btw, they need a house too.
The ninjas could come from The Art of some sneaky animal school, or something. Art school is too short, and sounds as if they're gonna attack you with brushes. :)
I'm gonna study up more on the Hashashims...
Anyone heard the Hawkwind song Hassan-I-Sabah, btw?

Me and my girlfriend are playing a Beastman game, we hit the city roof (i e had to build New Darkwald) even before the first war, on a standard map, so we need more city names.

Well, maybe you're correct them being available from small wonders...

I just thought of one thing: how can we limit it so, that those buildings are available only to that particular civ only? I'm not sure that's possible at all...
:(
Now, the civs that have assassin-type units are:
-Dark elves (blood cauldron)
-Wood elves (I know the wild hunt is not related to the waywatchers, but... how about just a "hunters guildhouse")
-Skaven (house of Eshin)
-Araby (hash house)
-Nippon (drunken monkey school ;) )
-Chaos dwarfs (Gits shanty)
-Lizardmen (Chameleon pool)

...

The civs need a civ specific tech for that.
Wood elves, Skaven, chaos dwarfs, Lizardmen already have that. Araby shares their tech with Ind, Nippon with Cathay and Ungols.
And the Dark elves don't have any specific tech.

But, when they have a specific tech, you just make the SW require a specific building (Temple, maybe).

We need lots of graphics then, and a bit of reworking the civs
- nippon might lose it's free domestication -tech (replaced by ninja tradition)
- ind wouldn't be anymore a copy of araby
- dark elves would lose their free mysticm

Here's some ideas for the Nippon's Ninja Academy:

Itachi Kan (Hall of weasels)
Kitsuneya (House of the Fox)
Hebimoto (Home of the Serpents)
Kazekage no Kan (Hall of Wind and Shadows)
Yamasen-Umisen Gakuin (the Academy of crafty fellows (literally, Yamasen Umisen means 1000 (years on the) Mountain and 1000 (years by the) Sea.... it comes from an old Sino-japanese legend that if a snake lives 1000 years in the mountains and 1000 years by the sea, then it will become a dragon, and the expression is used to refer to one who is sly and/or been around the block a few times)

I really like the idea of the Runsmith/Runelord.... I might even find a use for him in the FF mod.....

Wow unexpected on this thread ... One of the best bands ever ... cosmic acid rock ... Great theatre when they did the Elric sagas ... Nick Turner did an interesting solo project where he played in the kings chamber of the great pyramid of Giza.

To put some WH context ... I like to play the game listening to Space Ritual or Hall of the Mountain Grull.
