What about a great military leader?

You can accumulate great person pts for prophet, scientist, artist, etc. These are all peaceful units. How about great military person pts like a great general, leader, etc? I think that should be in the expansion pack.

Maybe his ablities could be:

founding a military academy - one additional xp for units built in the city

using him to give 5 units a free promotion or one additional movement speed

one exp point for units in one city sounds rather crappy to me, but the idead go into the right direction - there sure is potential for such a leader, and the folks surely just kept it back to glamorously announce its introduction in a soon-to-come addon...

Totally agreed on the concept of military great leader. But something you didnt address is how would you get the GPPs to get a military leader though? Maybe barracks, policeman in city (like scientist, engineer), heroic epic, something else...

If it's a free building any more would be unbalancing if you combie it with barracks, vassalage, theocracy, aggressive, and the other experience giving mechanics. Of course it could have additional small bonuses to defense, production and the like. Maybe a shorter production time of military units as well.

So cynical, Astat!

There are no military specialists. I suppose you can add an "officer" specialist and link him to the barracks, the castle, the bunker, the drydock, etc. But what benefit would he provide? Hammers make some sense, gold and food make less sense, but none of them really seem to go with the idea of a military specialist.

There also aren't many wonders in the current game that would suggest military Great Person Points. The National Epic and the Heroic Epic could, but that's all that comes immediatley to mind.

This is a great concept, imo. Policeman as the specialist could work...or maybe it could have to do with the strength of your garrison in a given city?

City defense percentage?

Pentagon? Red Cross? West Point?

Maybe National Guard type specialists that add a small defense and research bonus (Armed forces R&D)?

Well, the idea is for the expansion pack - probably new wonders to get you those gps. I remember in Civ3 you can use a great military leader to build Academy. Not sure what or how we can use a great military leader.

You read my mind. Just yesterday, I was attacked out of the blue by a long time ally, and was 8 turns away from Rifling, thinking "how can I speed this up?" You beat me to the punch!

Ohh a Great General ( or "insert military related name here" ) could discover or add a great many beakers to a warlike technology.

So what would the capabilities be?

Each GP has 4:

1. Has the potential to trigger a Golden Age. Requires two Great People for the first GA*.
2. May join a city and produce +1 science and +10% (more? less?) city defense, which seige units cannot eliminate.
3. May create an Academy (boost of Military Unit production speed and Research) in a city.
4. Can discover a Military-Related Technology.

Well, there already is an academy one, maybe he can join the city and automatically train 5 units of a certain type immediately (just for more variety). I like the other three traits, though.

Adding defense bonuses or experience bonuses would drastically change the game. It would break the game if the bonuses stack -- can you imagine trying to beseige a city that has 6 military specialists and 2 super specialists if each specialist gives +1 XP and +5% defense and each super specialist gives +3 XP and +10% defense? Especially if, as some have suggested, you can't use seige weapons to reduce the defense bonus.

one science academy per city.. now try to transfer this concept onto military leaders ;)

Right, I'm thinking a military academy, although Xoon, you kind of read my mind as I literally was thinking of the training of 5 units (something basic...longbowman, musketman, rifleman, infantry) as an alternative to the military academy.

I chose the MA because it would affect that city permanently, which is more along the lines of what other GPs do when you use them in this fashion.

If you wanted to get away from the "Academy" thing, what about a "Training Facility" that provides units created in that city with +1 experience point?

As for stacking defense, maybe instead of a bonus to defense, it makes seige units reduce defenses more slowly.

So a National Guard/Police specialist adds, say, a 5% defense bonus (which can be reduced by seige weapons) and the military super specialist causes a 10% reduction in the effectiveness of seige units...

I believe that in the customization forum, someone created a mod to include this.
