can you play real time with a bunch of people... say... like AOE? I like having more than one competitor and I was hoping some of you guys and gals might be able to tell me the different ways to play... I am not really interested in the PBEM... It seems slow...

Civilization II is turn-based. The AI never moves until after you've finished your moves, and so that's how it is with multiple players. Just think how long one of your turns takes in the later game, multiply this by 6, and that's your wait time between turns. Well, it's not really so long for several reasons, but just know that people do PBEM (I think) so they aren't tied to the computer while waiting.

You can trick Civ2 into a Real Time-like mode, called Simultaneous....as to how, it has been so long I cannot remember!
