What achievements should be in Civ 5?

Achievements seem like a great way to keep play interesting. I have never been motivated to "win," but I play a LOT. I like to see things grow and develop, and I tend to lose interest by the time it looks like I'm guaranteed to win. At that point, I usually start a new game.

Achievements would give me an incentive to do specific things, almost like the "missions" and task pop-ups from Civ IV.

BP - destroy an oil well.
The new world - establish/capture 15 cities in the new world in a game.
Smog - have an unhealthiness of 40 +.
Threesome - defeat three units in one turn.
Endless Eight - reload a save game with random seed eight times in one game.
The Way of the Warrior - train a total of 500 samurai units.
Sword of Damocles - raze five cities in one turn.
Opposite Reaction - lose a battle with 90%+ chance of winning.
What the? - defeat a technologically advanced enemy unit.
Rookie - win 3 multiplayer battles.
The Power of Money - spend 100,000 gold in rushing buildings and units in one game.
Greed - spend 50,000 gold in rushing buildings and units in one game.
The Sword Emperor - defeat ten swordsmen units in one game.
Thy Task is Too Difficult - siege an enemy city for more than five decades (renaissance era).
Defeat is not an Option - refuse a peace offer from the enemy when you're losing.

Collect 20 dwarf heads.
Bring me 50 elven ears.
Gather 30 skeleton skulls.
Kill 40...er...f***, sorry, this thread makes me always think i was in a WoW forum.

Achievements...aren't for everyone.

Blitzkrieg: Destroy, or force the capitulation of, one civ in 10 turns.
Resistance is futile: Win a war with no losses.
Bonaparte: Double the size of your empire and than lose your gains in 50 turns or less.
Peoples man: Achieve 100% approval by your own people.
Genocide: Destroy another civ, raising all their cities to the ground.
To the last man: Lose a game by being conquered with no units remaining.
Spartans: End a war against an empire with three times as many units at the start of the war, without losing any territory.
Fires of industry: Chop down 75% of all forests in your borders, and build 15 forges.
Pax Romana: Stop a war between two civs within 1 turn of the declaration.
Production!:strength:: Build 20 units in 5 turns.
By any means: Win a war in which you use at least 5 nukes.
King of Kings: Have three vassals and 5 friendly city states/puppet states.
Ozimandius: Achieve the highest score, only to be conquered later in the game.
Inconceivable!: Lose a battle in which you had a 90+ chance of winning.
You keep using that word...: Complete inconceivable 10 times.
They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist-: Kill a great general with ranged bombardment.

I think a great deal of people are misunderstanding what 'achievements' in the sense that Steam uses them are, they are, despite their name, not achievements. They are small badges, if anything. Their intention was never to indicate how good you were in a game.

Even one of Valve's flagship games, Left 4 Dead, doesn't even use the achievements system as a measure of your actually performance (see mine, for instance). The achievements are small goals that players are given, if they wish to fulfil them. While, of course, available for anyone to see, they are not intended and should not be used as a measurement of goodness of a player, for the most part. Okay, surely, some achievements does indicate some sort of devotion.

Oh yeah, and by the way, this is purely a service that Steam provides, but nothing that's required. Many games on Steam has no achievements, but these games are often also available through other services. So giving the statistics of games for Steam is adding achievements, I am going with a 90%-100% that Firaxis are going to develop them into Civ5.

You may not be able to turn them off, but trust me, achievements are hardly annoying.

And yeah, achievements also vary in difficulty. Some are as simple as 'finish a game' (maybe even an achievement for losing a game!) to some really over complicated and difficult achievements. Not that I can personally think of what would be the most difficult to do in a game of civ right offhand.

Achievements are not here to replace anything. They are just an extra fun goal for those of us who are not part of a community or do not seek a hall of fame.

I think most of the people who don't want to see achievements in the game don't actually find them annoying. They just consider them near worthless and a waste of development resources, not that they take much.

Can't argue with that. These does require some development time. But they are fairly easy to implement (as far as I understand), and I am not sure it is that many extra hours. And let's say, you're stuck in a rut during development; waiting for the graphics department to come back with something so you can see how your new change looks. What are you going to do while you wait? Implement achievements!

Contrary to popular belief, a lot of software development has its stand stills, where everyone is waiting for something. They are not working around the clock I'm afraid.

:bump:

World War- Have every civ in the world being fighting atleast one enemy at the same time

Children of the Nile- win a game as Egypt

Naval power- defeat 50 ships in one game

Passive-Agressive - Declare war on another civ but go 10 turns without having a unit fight their unit

Black Gold- control 10 oil resources in a single game

I like the idea of achievements. I enjoy the random events and quests for flavor more than for the in game effects, but have seen most of them by now. It looks like achievements could be a similar flavor type thing.

I personally don't get into the achievement thing and could care less about the achievements of other players.

But, I can see that some enjoy it and so, that's fine.

I play WoW, which has a metric bungload of achievements in it and people waste ungodly amounts of time chasing them while I ponder their sanity.

Ultimately, you game to have fun, I hope, and whatever floats the boat, right?

What was the point?- Use Steam one time, then go to offline mode, never to be seen again.

Yep.

- What Civ game are you playing?: Beat a tank with a spearman

Did this actually happen in prior civs?

Yeah, in Civ 3's faulty game mechanics. Civ 4 fixed it, however.

The pen mighty than the sword- Win a cultural victory without ever declaring war.

Win a game without losing a single unit.
Win a game before 1 AD.
Settle on five different landmasses.
Get a city with some huge pop number.
