Jesus. I'm not saying I was good at Civ III, far from it, but I was at least able to stay ahead of the tech race on Monarch. I'm getting my salad tossed on Noble. I feel like I am playing a pretty solid early game, but everyone else stays pretty far ahead on tech.

Ugh. Any common missteps that people take making the transition from Civ III that I might be missing? Is this game just really that much harder than Civ III?

The Game is much harder than civ3 but to win the tech race you have to use GP's

The most common mistake for a Civ III player is not using cottages.

Farms are now the exception to the rule for most cities; once you get pottery, start building up those cottages!

Your opponent will be, and then you'll be miles behind in tech and economy.

One thing that can really mess you up, in a way that works very differently from Civ 3, is the rate of expansion. If you settle or conquer a lot of cities early and without a strongly developed infrastructure you will cripple your own economy and research. So make sure to expand "responsibly," as I have seen it said.

Don't feel bad. I won on demigod in Civ 3 pretty usually, and occasionally on diety. I fight for my life on Prince in CIV IV.

The AI is much better -- its simply a wonderful game!

Follow the guides in the forum. Cottages are important, and specialize cities. I think some people started playing CIV IV and moved away from expansion, its still important.

Don't expand to fast. Hit the Financial Advisor and see where your money is going. Each city costs you more and more. Don't expand if you are paying a fortune in maintenance already.

You're not the only one, Xoon. I'm still losing on Noble, but not as heavily. I'm having to change my old Civ3 tactics a lot, to even compete.

What are GP's ?

GP= Great People I believe

Same here- Haven't been able to win yet on Noble, but my current game I am in the point lead out of 8 civs- but not by much- 2 major things I noticed that I stopped doing ala civ 3 was- building cities on resources- and going for all the quick techs instead of havinf a goal.
Another major major help on advancement is to get the ability to chop forests- and use your workers to quickly add hammers for building(especially wonders)
