need to share.
this was the first game that i reached the area limit before the population limit for domination. many little steps along the way, and some luck. SGL that became the great library, and the only source of ivory for zeus. it is the ending that is most exhilerating.
down to me and the mongols, they had a huge tech lead (playing sid, looking for any victory as i am not that skilled, other sid attempts are disasters, can't even begin to see how this can be beat on a pangea.). they had guerillas vs. my 50turn research on gunpowder. i could have simply started to grow my population faster, but i was afraid that mongols would get hospitals and the game would be over. so i tried to take a size twelve city. but after many attempts, with trebs and knights vs. riflemen (and one guerilla) i was denied and had to retreat to defend my main island. i had 67% of the land, and was watching my pop increase very slowly. was at 58%pop when i had enough area. i couldn't think of any way to grow faster. so slowly i would gain a percent. i was at 65% for so many turns, and i couldn't get that extra one. then i remembered i had some workers idle so i started joining them with cities. turn before the end i checked and had exactly 66% of pop. they had no attackers able to take my cities (though they had unloaded galleons and were ready to end my game within a turn). i figured it was over. end turn, waiting for victory screen. no! i was back to 65%, they must have grown. i had one more turn before they would likely start dismantling my cities. i had little left for defense and knew i couldn't last. i searched everywhere for workers or. i had 6 or 7 that could reach a city. i would add one and check, still 65. add another. the last one i saw brought me to 66, but it was going to starve down before my victory. i was able to find one more and joined it for a 1 citizen cushion. i was sure mongols would have some growth and my game was over. i ended the turn, expecting to see my whole game start unraveling, thinking how close i had come. . . . but there it was - Victory!. on the victory screen i noticed i had 70% pop. what? i looked at mongol cities and they had all lost alot. most from 12 down to 10. right away i checked their gov't. fascism. they had switched that turn, bringing down their population. what a break!! i thought i was done many times during this game, so rewarding to hang in and win. unless it gets beat this month i should just squeek onto the table too.
