What are the problems with MP that make civ players avoid it?

Big problem is time.required to play... hard to find 6 people willing and able to dedicate that time. I find tiny map 4 players, classical start, no ruins, abundent resources, quick pace, to be ideal. Seems to keep people from quitting early on, provides enough resources to not give one person control of iron and other major resources. By passing ancient era saves time as we have all the Terrain improvements and writing turn one.

Also I'm not sure about this regional lobby thing. I often find ppl from Russia, Europe, and Australia in my games even though I'm east coast u.s. based.

The problems with MP that need to be changed so that more people will apriciate it:

1. You need to be able to load a save file when u make a fool out of yourself loosing a worker to an enemy scout.

2. You need to be able to load a save file again when someone finsih the great library, HG, HS one or two turns before you (insert any wonder)

3. You need to be able to re-roll the map when you bet a bad starting position.

4. You need to be able to lower the skill of your oponents so that you allways will be able to win.

5. You need animated moves. Because in order to be really good at multiplayer it is necessary to wait a while between moving each unit in order to watch while every unit slowly slowly walks to the asigned position.

6. You need to be able to re load again when you lost a settler.

7. You need to be able to re load again when you find out that in order to win the game you should have done something compleatly different 20 turns back.

8. You need to get rid of those damn simultanious moves. Because everyone knows that there is NO fun playing CIV unless you get the pleasure to wait 25 minutes after finishing you moves for the other 5 players to finish.

9. You really need to get rid of those damn simultanious turns because the 8 hours it takes to finish a free for all game WITH simultanious moves is way to short. Who wants to sit only 8 hours in a row in front of the computer. everyone know that in order to have a gg you need it to last at least 40 hours.

10. At least we need pitboss in order to start playing MP because everyone knows that even 40 hours to finsih a game is a bit on the short side. The optimal game time is closer to 6 month and with pitboss that would be possible!

11. You need to have pitboss AND be able to re load a save file so that you are able to go back 20 turns to a point were you started that war you should not have started about a month ago.

(WARNING to myself and others: minor trolling)

Worst problem in MP(if we forget abaut lags and syncs ofcz) is that u cannot play anonymous with friends.

And when u know who is who u r know who good at war, who`ll go in science and etc. Wish i could find some anonymity mod or smth.

Just change your handle before you play.

Well simple fact is people quit and buggy probs.

I rec joining a group like NQ (No quitters league) where people dont quit and if a crash happens everyone reloads so the game can work.

Not perfect - but deals with multiplayer issues in Civ 5.

It was worse, now i don't see so much problems as it was just after CiV Vanilla release. I remeber we struggled to run 4 p game in CivLeague...
Now we have many options, its less laggy, and more features added...
I playing simultaneously 7 GMR games b/c i dont have time to play "real online", and it works amazingly well

All of the above.

It's still worth it, though! ;)

The problem is that the game takes an upper-tier modern processor to run properly, and not everybody has one. The game might not have the best graphics, but it will eat your CPU alive.

The biggest problem for me and the groupof players that I frequently play the game with is that there is NO multiplayer mod support and you cannot play custom maps in multiplayer thereby making the map editor a worthless asset to the MP community.

I agree completely that this is a problem, and even if they fixed all the technical problems with Civ5, if they don't give us mods the game loses it's replayability. This is the fate Civ4 MP had because the mod system was so un-user friendly that no one used it, and MP eventually died out from boredom, civ3 on the other hand still has 200 players in the league because they have a huge number of mods/scenarios they can play.
