I keep hearing "trainers" mentioned for different games. Please tell me what they are. Do we need them for Civ3?

I use trainers in my rollercoaster tycoon game. To get by a level I don't want to do.
So, as I see it.. a trainer is something that can make the game give you more cash, more military, more this and that (get by a scenario perhaps, only thing I used it for).
The only time I ever used a trainer was in "rct". I hate some of them scenarios.
So, to sum it up... it's a big cheat.
Normally "trainers" will allow you to do all sorts of things. Nuke everybody, win the game ... all sorts of stuff. Sort of a hack I guess.
And to edit .. errr.. I never need them for civ3. I just kill everybody. Sure a better definition of a "trainer" is coming soon.
