What can get scorched in a notebook - so that it still works perfectly?

Hello!

Right while I am typing this I can still smell a strange, burned stench coming from my notebook.

Yesterday it was extremely hot and I let it run at full power for 6 hours, 2-3 of them extreme demanding gaming. It is an Acer 291 LMi without proper §D card, so playing Guild Wars was very stressful for the notebook.

Then suddenly I noticed a smell - damn, like burned cables or circuit boards!!!

I immediately shut down the notebook.

Then I was looking for the problem. I did not find any except that the notebook was extremely hot, even the desk below it was overheated.

But what got scorched?

Today I started it again, let it run for hours, sometimes even taxed it heavily, but the smell did not start again. It is still present, and it is not coming from the exhaust port or cpu fan but rather from below the keyboard.

So, obviously, the notebook still works... good! But what happened to it?

Was it an insect that crawled somehow into the fan? Could cables be burnt and still everything work? I doubt that, but what minor part or insect can get burnt and cause this smell, without damaging the notebook?

I think sometimes stuff just smells when it gets overheated.
