Egypt.

A strange choice for me, but I want to explore the wonders a bit better (Egypt will help me with that), I want to explore ranged tactical combat a bit better (Egypt will help me do that), and I want a civ with a unique building to start.

A second choice would probably be Arabia as it fills some of the same requirements, and currently they will be able to field the largest late-game navy as well as a strong economy due to their UB and UA which I think might be interesting.

A third would be America... because I'm American. I'll have to start as expansionist and see how it goes from there.

Xetal if you want a good naval game you should probably play either England or Ottomans instead.

Arabia will have twice the oil of England or the Ottomans.

Destroyers, Battleships, Submarines, Carriers all use oil. 3 of those ships will be relevant all the way from their development until the end of the game. Missile cruisers will either use oil or uranium, and nuclear subs will obviously use uranium.

Add it all up and with Arabia you can have a really brutal navy. I think I'd take that over +2 naval speed.

Pre-industrial navy doesn't interest me as much, and I think that Arabia's bonuses towards economy will help their mid-game navy more than most other civilizations bonuses (though England's mid-game navy will likely be better due to the UA and UU in the same time period).

You are right in that. But seriously I belive England in archipelago maps is gonna be a Monster Civ:king:

I will play Rome in my first game and after that maybe English

Nobody seems to play Ottoman

Nobody wants to play Ottoman

Perhaps because we haven't been impressed by the Ottos power seriously for me its the weakest power though they counter that by having two godlike units in the Renessaince Era the Jannissary and the Sipahi:D

Rome. First play through I'll probably stop playing after medieval age anyway, so I may as well play someone who gets early game awesomeness.

Plus, they suit my perfectionist playstyle, I love constructing tons of buildings and making a super-capital.

This, but then for my "real" game, once I get the mechanics etc down, I will play random. Also I will probably read as much of the civlopedia as I can before I start playing, until I cant take it anymore and the urge to play is too great!

Random!

I fully plan to start the first game on an easy level just to get a hang of the new rules and interface and such, play for a little while, then probably restart a proper game.

I played Persia first in Civ3 and 4 and I was set on playing them from the moment I knew they're in Civ5. I can hardly wait to seriously exploit their ability with Chitchen Itza, piety policies and some grat people I don't really need.
I have also alreads planned my second game: Aztec OCC, trying to get a cultural victory. I'll first be investing in tradition and honor and build as many wonders as possible while raiding my neighbours to appease the sun god and try to ally with some city states along the way.
And I'll start on noble level out of pride.

Random for me, too... The civ unique abilities, city states, and expansion limitations really seem to really generate a whole lot of variation for gameplay (potentially so, at least). All the civs look interesting!

I want to take one and then really take my time in my first game... play slowly, think, plan, move, and try to play to the style that appears to me (i.e. with my civs UA, UB, and UU) and with what the AI pops out with.

I will also likely play on the neutral setting, i.e. Monarch or whatever.

My tradition was to start each new installment with the Zulu, hearkening back to my first game, when, at a time when everyone else was throwing around armor, I took over half the world with two chariots. Civ 4 kinda threw a wrench in that, so from here on out, I figure I'll take a closer look at the civilopedia before I decide.

I always play Rome first. So Rome. But then, based on how that game goes, whatever really trips my trigger will factor in to what the next Civ will be (based on Special Ability, UUs & UB).

Crap. Now I want to play Arabia and field the largest navy the world will ever know...

Or conversely, Play Arabia and acquire as much oil as humanly possible so that I might dwarf the reserves of the rest of the world by a staggering ratio of 2 or 3 to one. then I would distribute the oil across the globe in such as way as to maintain my military superiority whilst generating obscene forms of profit.

I'd sort of like to do this with Russia too, but it'd harder to do globally... Perhaps once you discover new continents, overseas trade would be the safest way to distribute your excess resources. I wouldn't want to trade too much with continental neighbors as they could pose a threat.

Hey if you people want I can make a story out of my first game as Rome. I was even thinking about doing something similar to the Sisuitil All Leaders Chellange.:D
