Hopefully this hasn't been posted before in the SMAC forum...
Anyway, what difficulty level do you play on? I still play on Specialist. I always get overrun by the AI at anything above that. Some help would be appreciated. But don't forget the main topic of this thread, though.

I play at the lowest level (Citizen?) most of the time, but I've done a couple of games on the 3rd easiest option.
That went ok, so I'll probably move up another level soon...

Hardest and nothing but.

Not directly, because the thread was about the level for a SMAC GOTM.

I still play at the third level, but not so often: mostly Civ2, sometimes Civ III, CtP, CtP 2 and SMAC and SMACX.

transcend only.the other levels are to easy and even transcend is quite weak imo so i havnt played in awile.less cheating and better AI would be cool in any next versian....

A piece of advice for anyone struggling on the lower difficulty levels....

Population is everything in this game. Since inefficiency only affects energy production and not minerals or nutrients, you MUST build a huge empire very early on. Post-early expansion, you're left with a massive empire from which you can build a massive industrial plant, which you can use later on to mass units and swarm your enemy.

So, just get as much territory as possible as quickly as possible, and then worry about building it up later on. Do absolutely everything you can to stay at peace, since your empire will be horribly weak until you're able to build the entire thing up.

The 4th level--equivalent to Monarch. SMAX is the only game in the Civ Family that I can consistently whip on Monarch. The Civ games I have to settle for regent, and Colonization goes back to Warlord.

Transcend. SMAC is much easier than Civ (where I'm an Emperor-Demigod border player).

The most key part of any strategy is to expand. Build armies of Colony Pods and Formers in the beginning. Play as the Gaians (or Cult, but they're weaker) and enslave Mindworms to defend yourself early on. Even on Transcend, it is easy to out-expand the AI.

sound good , my problem in hight level is that AI is always too close ,even in huge map, when playing at hight level . should try again Gaiin at trancedent level . I tried believer at talent after 3 coloni met the hive with Particle impactor(4) ans syntenal armor (2)and it seem hopless to defend with scout by luck I lost one city and destryed one of there new colony with rover and could make synti(2) garison and upgrade my scout (spoil of war)

i just give the AI what it whats intil i have built so large an empire it no longer matters.just expand in the other direction from the ai.often i get so wrapped up in building i forget all those steaming AI's and lose 6+ bases right away to sneak attacks(often my land neighbor) and have to go into total military mode to beat em back...just build about 1,000,000 supply convoys and you should win...

turn governers off and set the game to prompt you when any unit has completed.that alone should double your ability to win IMHO

The solution: don't declare war. Avoid all wars until you're so much larger than the AIs that they begin to gang up on you. Then it's time to win the game.

This is why I usually try to beat my closest neghbours into submission as early as possible.

As for governors: Do anyone seriously use them? It's hard to get an efficient empire up and running if you can't control what your bases are building...

Expansion: Each base should build one or two Colony pods, so that you are constantly expanding.

That's precisely the reason why I never use them! I even suspect their goal is to help the other factions...

At last try the expansion tactic with gaian.
this time was lucky got a big north continent in the north.
this gamee was hell .( Gain transedent Level ) have so many colony
that now when I build a new one I got a drone.
my first secret progect was the cyborg factory .at begining i had peace with almost everybodythen morgan the hive and spartan declare war on me.
the fight each other in there continent.when I got some missil jet i deccide its time to attack Lal talk to spartan declar war on lal and got truce with spartan quit easily conquer to colony base with jet and isle of the deep
made truce with lal and engaged mind control on one big colony for 2000 credit as well as some soldier lost a couple of jet and un headquarter is mine with all the secret project built.
the most funny thing is that i am late in tecnology Zakarov is first
my best wepon is missil (6)but can my 12AAA infantry
economic is crazy most income is from pod and mind w/o them i lost money every turn and am still the wealtiest with less then 2000 energy reserve,

Weird... I've never turned off governors, and usually get a score between 4000-5000. (That's better than my Civ2 scores, even though scores are calculated a little bit different in SMAC.) Or does that mean I'm playing badly?

Citizen :D

I play SMAC nowadays mostly to relax and to marvel at a perfect piece of software (bugs notwithstanding!) :)

I find that SMAC and SMACX are easier then Civ3 if you know what your doing... SO in terms of challenge, I don't feel challanged until Monarch+, but I think a huge difference is that SMAC is enthralling... I want to get the next tech to see how the plot goes, I want to build that secret project because most all of them a really good and the video's are great, I want to see what different tactics work where and how one faction can work one way and another a different way. SMAC pulled me in, while up until recently(when i got civ3c) civ3 was more like a chore then something fun, and to a certian extent I still have more fun with SMAC(The social engineering, the unit workshop, the plot, the voice overs, ect...), but I can't abandon Civ3c because I know it has so much potential and I want to see if the things discussed here will work for me... Right now I can conquest victory with the warmongers on each difficulty, but diplo and economic are harder on trancend difficulty, and Trancend victory on that difficulty isn't that hard to pull off, but I have to play more aggressively with the builder factions then I would like to. Again, I really feel that if you can come up with a good understanding of expansion is key, basic war tactics, unit building skills, adaptibility based on changing circumstances and social engineering skills; that the game is not as hard as Civ3, but developing those skills can take time, practice and a lot of experimenting, however SMAC makes me want to experiment where as Civ3c not as much.
