What do the Epics do?

National Epic and Heroic Epic -- the game always tells me they're very important and I need to plan how to use them. But I have no idea what they do. I so no visible results (maybe I'm not looking!) and I don't know how to "plan to use them" properly or what to do.

National epic gives + 100% Great person points.
Heroic epic gives +100% hammers when you're building units.

Definitely. You know lots of things capable of giving you thousands of beakers, culture, hammers, gold... And sometimes all at the same time, juste by clicking on one button ?

Yes, it is. They both help you specialize your cities. HE is built in one of your Military Cities (I call it a "Gun Pump") and this city will primarily build units. NE is built in a city to produce lot's of GP. I usually place it in a Science City (I call it a "Nerd Pump") and pair it up with Oxford U, so as to keep up a steady stream of GS'.
