What do you do when you get a low production Start?

I've gotten plenty of starts where there aren't enough brickyardable or woodcutterable tiles to get production from and I have absolutely no clue where to go from there. Do I try to move my founder to a place with more production? Do I try to settle a town later on that might serve better as my main city? What if i'm completely surrounded by flat terrain?

I try to get the right resources, either from expansion or from trade. It's difficult to get another city as main in Antiquity in many cases. It will always be 20+ turns behind, and a few more hammers will take the whole age to make up for that. But 2-3 production resources can make a difference in my experience.

But I usually switch capitals for exploration then (which I usually do anyway).

Smart, I do feel like it's a bit hard to get good trade routes connected in the early age

I learned from Civ6 to not be afraid to re-roll / re-create my start. I've had a few Civ7 starts where I see lots of tundra -- not enough food to get going. Definite restart for me.

Some starts are just objectively better than others and yeah you can easily just get a poor start into midgame through no fault of your own. That's ok though, because its not like Civ7 is too hard even on deity. Yes, you want to settle as soon as possible, but that's something you should be doing anyway.

I’ve held off on posting on this as I’ve needed time to acclimate myself to playing deity at Civ7. I tend not to worry about the starting terrain in my Capital as it’s going to be almost entirely Urban by the exploration era. I don’t pump population from towns unless I’m doing an Ankor Wat run in Anquity. I try and buy my 2nd and 3rd Cities early and use the production to plan where to put my specialist centers with the good adjacency. I try not not build warehouses in these settlements unless it’s the Fishing Quay and use the alter to reach out towards my commerceFood/scienceProduction/CultureHappiness location. Finally I may conquer or build out my last 2 settlements to serve as towns to feed my 3cities. I let these towns grow until there aren’t good tiles left or I’m getting close to Universities in the Exploration era. I routinely finish the Commerce and Science paths, I can get one of the pax thresholds, and none of the culture pathways.

Starts are sometimes slow but if you can come out of Antiquity with several attributes. You’ll put yourself in good position to finish all pathways in Exploration.

I use several combinations of leaders and Civs but Aksum/Spain is a great combination however not many mountains so you need to get your culture from social policies and trade but really good commerceFood adjacency possibilities.
