hail ceasar!

English: I can use those Men of War to establish an eternal british empire which will rule the waves forever

RULE BRITANNIA, BRITANNIA RULES THE WAVES, BRITONS, NEVER, EVER SHALL BE SLAVES

Babylonians

It just keeps coming to my mind the way they played in Civ I & II. By the time i found them, they would only have a few cities with all the terrain beefed up (while i still was building my first irrigation). The cities were always well developed and the techs went fine (never better than mine of course). Also funny was the fact that they always end up geeting razed by other civ. :slay:

Still...as soon as i get the game...

Iroquois (out) - Portuguese (In)
Persian (out) - Spanish (In)

I can understand the need for diversity, but a Civ game not having 2 of the most important nations in History is plain wrong. :(

BTW, 16 civs in one map will rock. Just check the pic about english communism in Thunder's post about Jeff Morris's Strategy Briefs @ Avault. (strategy forum)

This is a repost from another thread, but I feel it bears posting again (yes, I like seeing my name appear on web pages).

The zip file is an Excel spreadsheet that ranks the various units and characteristics and attempts to rank their usefulness.

Feel free to dispute my analyses. I suspect that I rank Expansionist higher than most people but the reasons why are listed in the file.

And, BTW, the French and Americans came out tied based on my early guesses.

Enjoy

1. Amercans: Their special unit's ability to conduct precision strikes(the only one, btw, other than stealth aircraft) gives them added flexibility to a fighter that will probably have an edge in either attack, defense or range, making it the true air superiority fighter of Civ 3.
My only complaint here is that the Americans are classified as "Expansionist" and "Industrius". I agree with an earlier comment that we were robbed on this one: the modern manifestation (since the civil War) of America has been primarily a commercial one. We really should have been "Commercial" and "Industrious".

2. Greeks: They have a good combination of civ specific abilities and I respect their culture and traditions a great deal. They were perhaps the most enlightened (relative to their time, as I understand that there were some aspects of their society that would be considered unacceptable by today's standards) civilization to have existed.

3. Germans: Militaristic and Scientific combined with the Panzer could prove to be a very powerful combination.

4. French: I mean, c'mon, they are the FRENCH. Besides, they have a cool color and very formidable civ-specific abilities. Their special unit is pretty good, but will prob become obsolete too quickly.

5. None: All of the other's have yet to interest me. Maybe my opinion will change, who knows?

Unserfritz, pick up a bloody book. First of lets talk of your "sweep" of French history. You seem to forget their was a period between Waterloo and WW1. During this time France turned from a nation that was ravaged by war and complete poverty to nation that was considered to be the strongest in Europe (thats why the Germans focused so much poliical and military pressure on them). Secondly, your criteria for judging a nation is complete stupid, and your facts are wrong. A nations industriousness should be defined by what cars it manufactures? Stupid! (as for engineering, French Engines Dominated F1 circuits during the mid nineties, Driven buy such great drivers as Damon hill and my Fav Jacques Villneuve). You state that French are "a far cry from an industrious and commercial nation. At least a quarter (25%) if not more of the population is employed by the government. " your point being? are you saying that people who work for the government aren't indutrious? Well lets look at the two systems we are talking about. A free market nation, like the United States, employs very few public servents. A mixed market nation like say Denmark has strong social institutions manned by many public servents. Now I'll let you guess which naiton had a higher rate of growth over the past fifteen years. Well if you said the Americans YOU ARE DEAD F*@^ING WRONG. So if you want to talk about this subject, I welcome it. But I caution you, post Ideas based on misconceptions, stereotypes and second hand "facts" agian and you will be ridiculed to the end of time!!!!!!

GOD BLESS THE FRENCH REPUBLIC!!!!!!
Thanks GOD!!!
Hey Whiskey!!! I have the truth in your hands!!!
I want to say that the french republic was the most powerfull industrious nation with the germans and the England. But one thing surprise me: the french was not religious? But the french was during a long time a cultural power.:king:

My choice, the Russian's. Starting the game with a scout will be vital and then Scientific advances on top of that... Cossacks and Cannons by 500 AD running amuck... The Horror!!

My favourite Civ right now are the Greeks, just because they are Scientific and Commercial. And I respect their culture but I can't keep up with those city names.

So first change that to the Dutch who are TMHO also Scientific and Commercial and then make sure to be the first with key advances and first to start building whatever. This opts for Scientific.

I assume diplomatic options will inform on other Civs advances as in Civ II, yet ya have to pay for an Embassy (or demanding tribute for another civ to be allowed to have diplomatic alliances...... kinda like that  ). Also in that case you might want to rush build. All of the above (including science!!!!!!) opts for Commercial.

All of this depends how the value of mass-build city improvements relates to the new style of Wonders. In Civ II much of my strategy was based on Wonders that actually replaced mass-build city improvements, i.e. Pyramids, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Szu Tzun, Wifeys Suffrage, SETI.

If so I would drop Scientific and use Industrious instead (and come with a new quote...).

Although I'll play the Chinese and Americans....

I'll probably enjoy the Persians most, I do so love tech superiority. Of course it will be interesting to see if I can pull off a win with mounds of tech, production and culture and no resources...

I may have to invent the Consultant unit to "leverage knowledge". :)

Hmmm....
108 votes and we have
Egyptians 0
Iroquois 1
Zulus 2

No question who the perceived duds are

Like what really happened in history? ;)

Just kidding!
:yeah:

I voted German. Not becuse they seem to have the best stats but I think they be most fun to play.
I just like to know the names of the cities and I dislike Anglosaxons(Americans and Brits) I dont give much about the french either.
I will play the Germans to win a cultural Victory, militaristic might come in handy because you'll get more leaders which I can use to rush build wonders
