What do you want in a Pitboss Game?

Yes and no. It's true that it slows it down but usually it's only a small # of people who are forced to wait. If you consider 2 people at war, one is going to always be going first and can still do his turn whenever he likes. It's only the person going second after turn start who needs to wait. As is the nature of PTBS with a timer, you are guaranteed to get 1 turn in a day with a 24 hour timer (for example).

The biggest problem we've had with this rule is accidents. Things like queuing up a movement order the previous turn and then logging in "early" to do misc things and having the movement order take place. Or a guy who destroyed some roads because he didn't think any of my units were in the area. Both of these of course are easily preventable and I tell people to just not log in until you are 100% free to do what you want. :)

No, I meant that not using the simultaneous turns option in pitboss slows it down to PBEM speed. Using the sim turns option but just putting your own rule in place regarding double-turns (your rule is just a little more restrictive than mine) is a reasonable balance.

Hey guys, I've found this Realpolitik game by following some people's sigs on these forums. It might interest you. I was able to join it with no fuss even though it's already in progress, and now I'm spending time I should be doing my job debating city placements and diplomacy with other teams.

I'm having fun so far.

There's also the SGOTMs on CFC and elsewhere.

I'm in one, but really I am more interested in running my own civ than participating in a collective effort.:twitch:

Yeah, I've never gotten into diplogames before, because the PBEM structure those just seems WAY to slow for me. I've done some PBEM for Alpha Centauri (still doing some, in fact), and the time it takes to conduct diplomacy and play turns when it's just one person per team is already enough. I can't imagine playing a game where it takes a committee dedicing where to move one warrior and one scout. ;)

But I like the Realpolitik one because duties are divided, turns happen every day, and I can type to my team's forum when I should be working!

If the DGs ever make it to Pitboss I'll check it out again!

I agree I'm enjoying this Realpolitik game, pitboss is a huge improvement when playing DG's

Civ A logs in and does his turn at 3PM
Civ B logs in, declares war on A, and does his turn at 4PM.
Civ C logs in, does his turn at 5PM, and as he's the last one to do his turn, the next turn starts. Civ C does his next turn.

Civ B logs in and does his turn at 6PM.
Civ A logs in at 7PM, and finds that he's at war and B's units are two moves inside his borders.

However Civ A then gets 2 turns as they are ending it. So Civ B has a momentary advantage, but now Civ A has two turns to get units in place to block or attack Civ B.

But the "advantage" might've taken place by then - CivB could've taken a city or two before CivA even knows they're at war, and this might not be recoverable. The big example I can think of here is that if CivB were to declare, but all of CivA's cities had at least a "culture buffer" around that would give them 2 turns to whip up defensive troops in underdefended cities. Instead of having 2 turns to whip defenders, they'd only have one turn, and that could make a huge difference.
