Here's an interesting statistic for you: 83% of Pakistanis are heavily in favor of the Taliban, while President Musharaff has allied himself with the United States.

And what does Musharaff have to gain? He's risking a coup d'Etat, and if rebels took over India, they would (probably) immediately deploy Pakistan's full nuclear capabilities against India.

So, why would Musharaff risk a coup d'Etat? What does the United States have that he wants, or, what does have to hide?

Because of the many connections of the terroist with Pakistan, Mujerharif was given the choice of being part of the coalition, or beings one of its targets. He would have ben attacked and replaced with the government he had overthrown if he did not cooperated. he has also had to purge many pro Taliban and some pro Al Quaida elements out of his government. He decribe the Pro Al Quaida population of Pakistan as about 10%, and adds that 10% of 198,000 is a big problem.

What does Pakistan really want?

A good @$$kicking is my vote!

Seriously, thats a good question. I agree with Lefty that he's just saving his own butt. Getting the sanctions lifted was a nice bonus, too. Look forward to getting X-Mas presents this year with "Made in Pakistan" on the box.

Maybe a good way to answer that question is what Pakistan doesn't want. Well it doesn't want the US cozzling up with its archenemy, India, anymore than as it is right now. It doesn't want to be targeted by America for harbouring terrorist activities, which it does. It doesn't want diplomatic isolation fr the world, as the US pressurized allies and other countries to break off diplomatic relationships with Afghanistan. And so on .....

Pakistan i think is just sucking up to the United STates, so they can have future talks of other plans.

Well better ask what does Musharaf want? and even better ,like SKM said ,what doesn't he want.He doesn't want troubles with America,no'r with india ,no'r with his own population and he want's to save his country economy ,wich is almost bankrupt.
Working toghether was the best dicision he could make out of two options originated from september 11'th ,and had to chose one of them.america can provide him with fundings ,millitary material and diplomatical support.America can solve some of his problem's.But now that he has chosen to follow this path in the future he has to eliminate a lot of opposing fractions in his country.A lot of Taliban supporters have been worked out important goverment positions, for ex. a lot of genneral's and intelligence service boses. He need's to do that to stabilize his own position and security. He will have a hard time fighting the so many terrorist supporters in his own country. You know ,pakistan is getting so unstable, the position of Musharaf is certainly not guaranteed.
