What does Vanilla mean?

What does it mean? I've heard it several times.

It means the version of a game without any expansions installed. So if you had just civilization 3 without play the world or conquests you'd be playing civ 3 vanilla.

It should be "plain-vanilla" but, like most often used words, it is often shortened in use.
It is not specific to Civ, "plain-vanilla" is a general slang term.
