Spoiler :
No one knows what happened to the Aifons. There was a prophecy of destruction, a sense of foreboding and a coming darkness that went on for years. Strange events became more frequent, animals that lived in peace with the Aifons turned violent, animals were born with deformities and the most spiritual suffered horrible nightmares.
The omens were so prevalent that their most promising young adventurer was sent to sequester help. What he found was all bad, without exception every prophet foretold his death and the death of his people. Some told of even worse than death, of eternal loss. Some just fell to tears when they tried to augur his future.
Trenton never did find out exactly what could cause such destruction, but he did find a way to stop it. A ritual that would allow Danalin himself to enter creation.
The quest for it was a long one and Trenton met and learned a lot about the Godswar, the Compact and Godslayer. He talked to Branding of the Grigori about the role of the gods, and priests of most of the good and neutral religions. In the end he stood upon the island home of his people the day before their prophesied doom and considered his options. His friends were around him, the ritual was in hand and he had everything he needed to perform it. But he decided not to do it.
Maybe Trenton didn't believe that the threat was real. Maybe he though it was just a trick to restart the Godswar. Or maybe he knew that even though what he did might save his people, it would eventually destroy many more.
The next day was still and silent. Children played in the water as the adults sat and waited nervously. Every solider stood vigilant guard under the silver symbol of their people, a bottomless triangle that many assumed was a shark fin but was in fact the central mountain of their island home. Despite Trenton's decision not to perform the ritual Danalin still loved his children and awoke the greatest of his creations to protect them. Chief among these was the great Leviathan who swam deep beneath the island awaiting any attack.
The peace was shattered by a sudden flood of irrational cries and prayers from the Aifons, then nothing. No souls passed into Danalin's vault, none passed into Arawn's underworld. They were simply gone.
The islands themselves are uninhabited now, though there is evidence people lived there (both above and below the water) the entire area is tainted with the same influence the Aifons had noticed up until the attack. But there was nothing left of any of the people, Trenton or his companions.
The only creature to have survived the attack was the Leviathan, though he has been driven mad by it. He is now a mindless killer taking every opportunity to destroy any life he comes across. If the memories of the attack remain in the Leviathans mind, they are nothing but haunted visions that drive him on.

So, what happened to the Aifons?

Perhaps it was the search button. Or maybe a post similar to this.

The problem with the search button is you can only search for keywords. So when I searched for things like "aifons", or "aifons disappearance", I only found unrelated threads or speculation.

Thanks for the link, though. It makes sense, though it seems to go against the Leviathon entry which states or at least implies that Tenton decided not to even begin the ritual.

Edit: Here's the post for people who want to see it.

The Aifons mysteriously disappeared, and no one really knows why. Their souls are not to be found in any gods vault.

Xienwolf has speculated that Tenton Majosi's attempts to save them may be what doomed them. In his quests to find some way to protect his people Treton eventually uncovered a ritual that would allow him to summon his god Danalin into creation to protect them personally. He began casting it, but then changed his mind when he realized that binging Danalin into Erebus would trigger another godswar and end up killing many more people. Xienwolf speculates that the ritual itself (which is probably similar to The Draw) was powered by consuming the souls of his entire race, and that Trenton was not able to stop it in time to avoid paying this price. Presumably when this ritual found its way into Illian hands i already had most of the power it needed from the Aifon souls, so the Illian casualties were much smaller. Kael has neither confirmed nor denied this, as e prefers to keep things related to the Aifons and the Overlords a secret.

Although Danalin could not personally get involved, he released his pet the Leviathan to protect the Aifons. He presumably witnessed whatever it is that happened to him, but could do nothing to stop it and was driven completely insane by the experience.

Danalin was very depressed by the loss of his favorite people and chose to go to sleep to escape the emotional pain over their loss. At this point, Mammon's archangel Hastur sneaked into Danalin's vault and began whispering horrible things into his ears, things which work their way into his subconscious and manifest themselves in his dreams although not always the way Hastur wants them to manifest. Danalin is dreaming about Hemah, another effective dreamer like himself. I sometimes think this means that Hemah is the character he takes in his dreams, thus making Hemah an avatar of Danalin, even if he doesn't know it. Hemah has a tragic life, thanks to the influence of Hastur.

It is implied that the Overlords may be the products of Hemah's dreams, or of Hastur's whispers, or of both. I believe Kael said that he knows a lot more about the Overlords than he has let on, but that the true story is less interesting that the mystery and the guesses so he refuses to ever reveal it. No one in Erebus knows the truth either, including the gods and the overlords themselves, so it is appropriate for it to make no sense to us.

Last night I got a dream about serving in the Mercurian Army in their Sack of Dis:lol:

"Lord Basium... How and why do you even have that sack?!"
"I don't understand the question."
