I keep seeing dialog boxes saying "you have entered the medieval age", "you have entered the industrial age", etc. but I have no clue what actually changes when you enter a new age. Can anyone enlighten me? TIA.

Well, not beelining, but getting to them in good time is not a bad idea. I'm not sure about the old techs getting cheaper, but those techs that advance your age are always a good idea. Besides, it's fun to spam riflemen when your enemy has naught but maces

that is very annoying! and the music changes, which for me means as soon as i see that "modern era" pop-up i change to my own music if i wasn't listening to it already *giggle*.
one thing is that when the game enters a new era, the barbs get a huge discount on the previous era techs, or get 'em all free a few turns later, something like that. know that when the game era changes the barbs get a big "catch-up" boost, i just can't remember the details.
that's based on game era, which isn't necessarily the era that you're in. it's the average era, rounded down, of all players still alive. so you can be an era or two ahead or behind the game era.
the game era also impacts at least one other thing, it's part of the "is this city going to go into a culture-flip revolt" formula. i wouldn't be surprised if there are some other things that i don't know about. edit: remembered another, war weariness.
