what is a mod called when it comes in one ready to install set with all scenarios, graphics, and everything needed to be played as a game. can you recommend any futuristic sci-fi mods?

Uhh... nice flow of your ideas. What are you asking? Are you asking what a mod is or are you asking for a sci-fi mod? Or are you asking what a sci-fi mod is?

im asking about both. what is a mod, and can you recommend a futureistic/sci-fi mod. im still in the progress of my first civ game but im just wondering this. and should i worry about learning the game before mods?

A mod or modification is simply a set of files (XML, python, and a DLL, which is written in C++) that are placed in the Mod folder of your install directory. These can then be loaded into the game.

Many mods add content, some aim to fix what are percieved as bugs, and others just enhance the game.

You dont really have to learn the game before using mods, but it can help you develop strategies. I definitely suggest you try the BUg Mod, which is an interface mod that greatly improves the interface and makes information much easier to find.

For a Sci-Fi mod, try Planetfall or Dune Wars.

Also note that some of the bigger modpacks have installers that make it easy to install them - that is especially true of big mods that change large parts of the game.

If you just got CivIV, you'll also have to make sure that it's patched up to the newest version, as many mods are only compatible with the latest patch (you can get it here).

About the Sci-Fi mod: If you're looking for a full-on mod that changes the entire game, Planetfall and Dune Wars are indeed your best bet. There are also two mods included with CivIV: Beyond the Sword, Final Frontier and Next War. Final Frontier is a space mod where the entire game is in space and you have planets and solar systems instead of cities; Next War is the normal Civ game + near future (i.e. instead of stopping in our time, the technologies include some futuristic ideas).

Cheers, LT.

this is for beyond the sword correct? so wouldn't i need the latest patch for civ4 (when i click update in civ4, it says no updates are found? is the beyond the sword update the only update i need for civ4 or are there other updates by firaxis?

Depends on the game version you have... older versions (before the the packs that included Beyond the Sword as well), would need patches as well... but nobody plays the game without the expansion anyway (ditto for about every mod, they almost all require BtS as well). Note that the in-game patcher is incredibly unreliable, so definitely download the patch for Beyond the Sword manually!

Apart from that, have fun with CivIV (+ all the mods)! :goodjob:

(and if you like a mod or have feedback on it, head back to the forums and drop some comments, mod creators tend to find that useful and/or rewarding ;) )

Cheers, LT.
