What is going on with those combat fx??

The graphics and art style is finally growing on me. Looks like they have toned down the saturation straight away after the first screenshots and I love the Leaders. And I LOVE the day/night cycle.

But seriously, what is going on with those fx during combat scenes?? It really looks (and I hope it is) completely unfinished and totally out of context. It looks manga style and horrible. It looks like ugly fireworks... I think it doesn't fit two swordsmen fighting, and would still be way too exaggerated for gunfire.

I really hope it's not finish, but was wondering what you guys were thinking about those?...

I hope they'll keep them, if only because it'll be hilarious to watch the hate, and I won't be harmed because I always disable all animations. :D

As with all aspects of the art, it's exaggerated to increase the vibrancy. It's lively without running the risk of the uncanny valley by being too lifelike. It shows that they aren't taking themselves too seriously and it challenges the fans to do likewise.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I think the "red fireworks" is meant to look like blood splatter without being overtly gory hence the deliberate "silly" look to it. After all, civ deals with very serious themes like genocide and famine but still has to appeal to most ages.

If it's supposed to be blood, how do you explain the yellow, then? Lymph?

It'd be OK if it was gunfire, but how come arrow wounds turn into big fiery 'splosions?

Just like OP, I'm loving the new artstyle in general, but I'll download the first mod that removes those awful combat effects.

Also, this is what, the 10th thread about the new graphics now? :D

After watching the video again, I think the real reason for the explosions is to give the player an easy visual queue for how the battle is going. Each explosion corresponds to a hit so you can easily see each explosion and know how many hits your units took and how hits the enemy units took.

My thoughts exactly. Still look quite crazy.

I liked one member's comment when the first combat animations were revealed.

Exploding barbarians confirmed.

Whatever.

I don't care for them. I have become accustomed to the style of the graphics, but the combat animations are the real standout of being outright bad. Unfortunately, I don't expect them to change.

It's not game-breaking and only a minor irritant, but as someone who actual enjoys watching combat animations, it's a disappointment.

Another terrible design by the design team. Just one of many.

I'll be forced to turn combat animation off, as I'm definitely not watching that.

Some guy with too much power: You know those comic book "Kapow!" icons?

Art designer: Say no more fam.

Same here. It's just a little bit too much, maybe if it was toned-down a bit more it would be fine.

Reminds me of comic book combat:

From the video, if I remember correctly, at least it looks like the large, reddish hit effects only happen when a unit is defeated and most of the normal hits are the smaller yellowish ones.

I actually kinda like your version.

I saw the combat animations in the video and I don't like them ... I prefer Civ5-style ... also I noticed that (modern) units have only a small number of members/vehicles compared with Civ5, e.g. 2x7 riflemen in one unit in Civ5 looked cool

I do hope that they'll improve them as they seem quite garish and out of place.

If not, the funny screenshots thread will have plenty of material, anyway. :P

I would love to play with your version

The animations look really good for the most part, but I hope they'll polish those effects a bit more. Its the only thing about the artstyle that I don't like so far.

But...

This should be a mod.
