What is the best RTS (Real Time Strategie) game?

AoE2 of course!

Starcraft is old old old old old and fun. Every summer I have a sudden urge to play it, then I get bored of it after three weeks

Id love to see Starcraft2, but Ill bet Blizzard wont make it until 2010. I mean, theyre working on a Starcraft console game first person shooter that I heard of five years ago. I think Blizzard wasted WAY too much time and resources on WarIII, which from what I hear isnt too good...

Yeah, its Starcraft: Ghost. They are barely making it, though: they have a handful of other companies doing the work for them. In the words of Penny Arcade..."Someone has to count the money." I think they should stick where they're good: RTSs.

After having played, I say Age of Mythology.
It isn't much innovative, but mythology is so fascinating (expecially greek)

Favourite games when they came out:
-Warcraft 1 and 2 - it's so stupid now to see your orcs standing there stupidly exchanging hits with your enemy.

-Comand and Conquer (1)

-Age of Empires - especially rise of rome.

-Total Annihilation - classic

I think it would be a tie between Starcraft and Outpost 2. I really liked Outpost 2 for some reason but everyone else said it was aweful.

Stronghold is the only RTS that i really ejoyed playing.

I thought the rest were very weak.

Total Annihilation + TA: Core Contingency.

Even today it's still unrivaled for its engine and variety of units. TA's mass battles are second to none. And you can get some brilliant mods. All time best RTS imho.

Age of Mythology! At least its first impression. I'll have to see how long it lasts, but I've had the most fun with it so far (I've had it a week), at least compared to the AoE games (never played StarCraft).

Oooh, you're missing out, CGannon64! I enjoyed SC even longer than WCIII or AoE. Have fun with AoM, though.

TA, definitely. Only problem was the AI- Either became too strong or too weak. Never tried MP though. Phantom Lord is right- Variety of units, MASSIVE battles, cool weapons and effects, and still runs great on my computer. Only problem is: I don't have it.

Stronghold is a close second.

Total Annihilation had some expansion packs which included AI by a guy mnamed Switek. It is called Switek's killer AI, and believe me, on hard, you get tank rushed in the first 3 minutes some times.

If you loved the AoE series then for the love of god go buy Cossacks and addons, very similar interface but SOOO much better and with a staggering 8000 unit limit (which was itself removed in the addon), formations, real tactics, damn the list just goes on. Only slight downside is the weak AI, definatley a favourite for multiplayer.

After some comments here I decided to look for bargain games (yes I'm a bargain hunter...) mentioned here. I found AoE-RoR for €7.99. Now I only have to figure out how to play and how to win.
Looks like fun though!

Number 1 is definitely Starcraft: Brood War. Red Alert 2 is pretty good, same goes for AoE 2. But they don't have anything on SC.

Although Ground Control 2 looks interesting...

I think #1 now would have to be Rise of Nations. It pretty much fixed everything that was wrong with AoE2 (like having to replant your farms every 5 freaking minutes) and added some cool new stuff that AoE2 didnt have, like national borders. Its a really sweet game.
