What is the closest you have been to being killed?

Probably the horrible car accident I was in back in March, or the horrible car accident I was in when I was 12, or the time I fell off the roof of our two-story home and landed on a pile of 2x4s. I've almost died plenty of times, but death sucks and is unable to finish me.

Maybe there is a Final Destination thing going on though ;)

I guess it would be the time I darted across the last lane while crossing a road. A motorized tricycle was speeding along at the same time and passed the spot where I was as soon as I hit the sidewalk.

Or it could be the time I picked up a cone snail shell at the beach and saw it emerging. I was about to touch it too but then decided against it.

1. 1966 - Vietcong sapper attack.
They were quite crafty!

Mine would have to be the portion of my deployment to Iraq in 2003-4 when we got attack almost daily, and I had several close calls (direct fire, IED, mortar/rocket attacks, and terrible food poisoning!).

Birth-Left lung was collapsed. Almost died before they managed to inject air into my lungs.

2.5yr-Standing on edge of Grand Canyon. Almost fell to my death. Apparently some 10yr person grabbed me before I engaged in my curiosity.

3.0yr-I fall down a flight of stairs. The top portion was carpeted, but the bottom portion was hard tile. I remember the pain experienced.

3.5yr-Cancerous tumor in my left ear. Had they not operated immediately, I would not only be deaf in that ear, but also would have spread to the brain.

4.0yr-I slip and fall onto some tile, head first. I black out. At least I was only 15kg and 1m, otherwise I would suffer more injury.

9.5yr-Almost got completely swept by a wave in Hawaii. 15 feet high. No one was around except for my mother--thank goodness she could swim well.

10.0yr-Appendicitis nearly kills me. I barely made it to the emergency room. It was imminent to rupture as I was place on the operating table.

13.5yr-Awful flu. The worst part was that I had also eaten bad food during the bout with the virus. Two weeks of near-continuous vomiting. I was emaciated after the ordeal.

That's it so far. Nothing has occurred in the past few years.

I'd forgotten about it until the third page but I also needed life support for breathing in the first week of life. So that's probably the closest to death, though it wasn't really to being killed.

The first answer that came to mind was when I found myself facing the wrong way on a highway after a friend had swerved to avoid an animal and ended up doing a 180 (soon followed by another 180). Fortunately traffic was very light, and we didn't end up crashing into anything. But it could have been quite bad with heavier traffic.

Another possibility is when I feel face-first from about 9 feet onto a gravel surface, almost exactly a year before the above experience. My first instinct then was to make sure I still had mobility in both arms and legs. It resulted in an unexpected afternoon at the dentist's the next day, but nothing serious and long-term.

The other contender was when I managed to bash my head open on a wall when I was one year old. I don't remember it, so I don't know how serious it was, but I still have a scar on my forehead from it.

I can't think of quite the adjective I want, but there have been many stories here that are some combination of sobering, serious, subdued (in atmosphere), and moving. Probably good that I don't plan to go to sleep right away.
