What is the difference from Civ IV and the complete edition?

Hello, I'm very new to the civilization series, and it seems that my crummy old PC can only play civ IV, which I have been looking into.
I am very confused though, if I get the Complete Edition, am I restricted to only using the colonization part? Or can I do the same thing as I would be able to in the regular version.

and Colonization is a separate game (just uses the engine)

You want to play BTS and make sure it's patched fully. I recall a little quirk with BTS patching for the Complete Edition

I installed Complete last spring on a new Win7 setup with no problems. It came with BTS 3.17, so I downloaded the 3.19 patch from the forums and it installed fine. No funny hoops to jump through. However, I did not let the game install where it wanted to in the 32 bit folder. I created a separate Games folder at the same level as the 32 bit one and put it there. That may be the quirk that lymond is referring to. I think that if you put it in the 32 bit folder you have to access the properties screen for the game and give it admin privileges.

I have Civ 4 Complete. It doesn't come with Colonization, but I have never had any desire to play that.

In terms of differences to the original, if I remember correctly, Complete works with Win 7, and doesn't require the disc to be in the drive. Not sure if patches fixed those things for the original. Anyway, you really want to get BTS because it improves the game a lot over vanilla. You can still play vanilla or Warlords if you want with Complete installed, so get that.

If your Civ IV complete doesn't have Colonization you got gypped. Might want to check again. It doesn't install automatically with Civ and the expansions, but it should be on the disk.

It's a great game, btw, especially with the right mods.

I thought maybe RBJ typo'd that and said that opposite of what he meant

The european version of Civ4:Complete does NOT include Colonization. Thanks Obama!

What's funny is that based on what I've seen on the forums, Colonization is more popular in Europe than America.

Yep, Obama and Sid worked that out over a round of golf  (hey! leave our prez alone)

Base colonization barely worked and wasn't that good of a game.

BUT, if you check our the R&R mod they put a lot of effort into it and is a VERY VERY good game.
They even just released a new version so you can tell that they're still working on it.
Kudos also to the Tac mod that they built it on top of.
There's a forum for it here that I really suggest you check out if you own complete because it's basically getting a fine game for free.

So to get it straight-
Civ 4 complete comes with full civ 4, the expansion, and as a separate game, colonization?
Thanks for the responses, you guys are very helpful :)

Yes, you'll get CIV + all expansions, and there seem to be 2 different complete versions, one with Colonization and one without.

Maybe you'll post again in this thread and tell us whether your version had Colonization with it or not.

This forum btw. is a place of many really helpful people, one of the main reasons why I like spending so much time here :)

Thanks for telling it to me straight!
Thankfully, it's pretty cheap on ebay, so I'll buy it from there one of these days, and you'll get an update :)

One more thing, is the games for windows thing still needed?
I have an XP, and I don't know if I will be able to download it, if that's how it works.

I bought mine for 5€ from amazon.de , maybe you wanna go there too, it's maybe even cheaper than eBay.

The last part of your post is unclear. If you have Windows XP, that'll be enough. When you buy the game, you'll get it in a box, download is only if you buy via Steam.

Last summer I purchased from Amazon the DVD version of the "Civilization 3 & 4 complete edition". Comes with civ3 + both xpacks. Civ4 + both xpacks and Colonization. In addition it is pre-patched to 3.19. All on one disk for $20. Also NO Steam account required.

I'm actually looking at it on ebay; there's the civ 3 plus exp and civ 4 plus expansions and colonization for ~13 dollars :)

Based on the immense amount of enjoyable recreation time I have gotten from those two (three counting Colonization) games that amounts to a tiny fraction of a penny per hour. Excellent value.

actually there are other DD vendors that sell Civ

So I got the games, here's how it goes (in case anyone happens to be curious)
Get the game, it all comes in one disc, and when I put it in, it tells me to choose what I want to install; civ 3 complete, or civ 4 complete+colonization.
I did Civ 4 and Colonization first, and got 4 icons:
1- Play Civ 4 Warlords
2-Play Civ 4 BTS
3-Play Civ 4 Complete.
4-Play Civ 4 Colonization.
I noticed that playing civ 4 complete actually didn't have BTS on, although I'm not sure about warlords atm. I just played the BTS one, had great fun so far! :)
Anyways, that's the quick update, thanks again for your help!

CIV (original), Warlords, and BTS are all launched independently of one another. There should be an exe file to launch each of the three. When you launch the BTS exe, it will load what it needs from the original CIV plus the BTS changes. You won't see any option to launch Warlords or BTS when you launch original CIV. You must use their exe files to launch them.
BTS contains all of the changes that Warlords added except some of the Scenarios.
